Just to give you an idea of the noises I have been dealing with today, I have 4 chatty Irishmen on the roof next door redoing the brickwork with all the required banging, clanging, brick dropping and bull sh**ting accompanying their efforts. The grocery store behind me has been demolished to be rebuilt and the construction crew is using an excavator that hasn't seen grease on it's wheels since 2003. Further down the site, earth movers are digging out a giant hole and making new ones for the pilings soon to come with assorted building shaking and vibrations. Add to that various school buses, delivery trucks, helicopters, tourists for the Cubs Game, landscaping crews and dog's barking. I know you are so jealous I get to work in such an environment.
In the midst of this cacophony of sounds, I made a discovery. I'd switched out my mics from the U87 to my old AT 4033 to work on something else and all of the sudden the noise floor dropped to nonexistent. I wasn't getting all the room noise and garbage that I got from the Neumann. I'd been reduced to recording/auditioning after 5pm before but no more, I've found my construction mic! I knew the U87 was sensitive but until now hadn't done a comparison. It's now resting on it side until after 5 when we'll both have a cocktail and then get back to work. Not banging nails yet with the AT but if I have to... _________________ Pam Tierney

While Todd had me all agiggle, Pam made me want to give a big high five!
I've not talked up my beautiful new mic or posted comparisons here because I've not really been able to use it. The summer has consisted of work crews on our tiny street almost daily. And I don't mean just yard work, I mean actually digging up, refilling and digging up the street again and again and flippin' again! The water mains replaced. The sewer replaced. Now the gas company is out there replacing the gas lines. I have some amazing photos of all of these events, including burst water mains, nasty sewage pipes and dozens of workmen. (must remember to get the car damage photos tomorrow...)
Turns out, as I proved today during the beep beep beep of the backhoe right outside the studio, my SM57 will be what nails the lid to my coffin down. I'm so excited to use my new mic but, for now, am happy I can maintain great audio when all of this crud is going on.
Keep on Keepin' on, Pam. _________________ 006 member of the Sisterhood of the Traveling Mic. Bonded by sound.

Pam,
How cool that you've found a good use for that old microphone! May peace and quiet return to your world in due time. _________________ Be well,

I uploaded a couple of pics from this latest round.
Here's the water main break just down the street last week. 20 foot sink hole for this one. Looks kinda pretty with Holy Cross in the background.
Here's the machine that dug the initial trench last Friday while I was in a phone session.
I'll spare you the rest of the photos, like the ones of the dump truck that backed right up to my front fence, squishing my grapes while the front tires were on the sidewalk across the street.
Pam, I think demolition of a building would make me want to hurl! _________________ 006 member of the Sisterhood of the Traveling Mic. Bonded by sound.

Oh it's a 5 year old boys dream with all the big machines out back. I can't wait until the pilings start getting pounded into the ground!
Hopefully Mandy your situation will be remedied quickly and quiet restored. Mine however has an 18 month construction schedule. Rapture! _________________ Pam Tierney

I was so thrilled two years ago when my neighbors scheduled having all their roofs replaced by the same contractor while I was trying to get a 20k word e-learning project out the door.
My new CS5 has 6db higher self noise than my old TLM 103 but it's countered by
1.) The new mic is more sensitive in the mids - I'm getting fuller presence with less gain and compression is more effective.
2.) The new mic doesn't pick up as much room noise.
3.) If things get really bad I can throw it into hyper-cardioid
4.) The new mic has a low pass as well at 15k...that can help a bit too with some noises.
And there's also my dynamic option, e935 which I really like. _________________ Skype: globalvoiceover

Not exactly VO-related, but three weeks ago my folks came to visit in our new digs. We had been raving ON and ON about how quiet it is up here and how'd they be able to sleep in.
well... the first morning we were all awakened at 0gawdhundred by a ditchwitch operator cutting a gas line through solid bedrock about 50 feet up the road from us. It went on all day.
Luckily I had no VO work that day.
but, a few days ago i was trying to frantically get a VO done for a short project the day before leaving on a business trip. I got everything set up, etc. and not two minutes into the session, a huge thunderstorm begins. I'd seen the clouds but didn't think it would get here that fast. _________________ Charter Member: Threadjackers Local 420 |

I find the best time to record is from 11 PM til morning but that does require flipping ones whole schedule around. I don't mind except that the rest of the business, medical etc. world won't change to accommodate me.
Ah my kingdom for a wee huttie.
