Five weeks ago I got a new 1T bit external Hard Drive (HD). I got busy backing up the other 4 external HDs (I hardly throw any thing out).

This AM getting ready to produce a program and Big Mama (Now Named Phoenix) a 500 Gig drive would not come up and be recognized by the Computer. First a bit of panic over the loss of a lot of data and a dead HD.

Then realized everything backed up on the 1T. However being well trained by US Navy in electronics I got to thinking and did trouble shooting on Big Mama. Hard Drive OK, the supporting electronic in the external case not OK.

Now Phoenix (nee Big Mama) is resting comfortably in computer case and working.

In the end it wasn't the data that I was worried about it was the loss of a HD.

Lesson I learned? Don’t throw it Out before Checking It Out.

Ed,

Had a similar situation with a 300Gig external drive I was using as a back-up for my "office" computer. It's always nice to know when something's not really, completely, broken.

I kinda sorta had the same thing in reverse, Ed. DH's computer woke up dead, bought new box, couldn't access the old data from the HD, pulled it out and put it in an external housing. Clunky but functional.

Hmmm...do I have a new vocal descriptor???

With external drives, I find many times it is the enclosure that's failed, not the disk itself! Always check the drive with another USB adapter.

How true it is. I just had a similar external hard drive failure experience. In my case, the HD and the enclosure circuitry were in good working order. Turned out that the external power supply had failed. Before I knew what the problem was I sent the entire unit back to the manufacturer for troubleshooting and/or data recovery. They nailed down the source of the problem and shipped it back to me with a new power supply at no cost even though the product was out of warranty. So taking the time to talk to the manufacturer saved me a couple hundred bucks!
Regards,
Raymond
