What's the concensus on these, versus the standard nylon fabric ones---which I use, but which also filter out some higher frequencies....still sounds fine but just wondering....
I'd be using it with a couple of high-end large diaphragm condensers, and a Sennheiser 416...thanks for your input! |

I have a Steadman. They're okay...they certainly halt plosives, but they color the sound more than a mesh screen, and they are prone to odd resonance at times. Really prefer mesh screens. _________________ Skype: globalvoiceover

I agree with Lance on the Stedman. Does something weird.
The Shure Popper Stopper is really good. Has three very thin layers.
Tones down ssssssssssssssssssses too.
I don't use a pop filter with my 416. _________________ www.asapaudio.com |

I've been using a Stedman proscreen...didn't realize there might be an issue. Now I'm paranoid. _________________ www.chriskoprowski.com/en |

i've stopped using a pop filter completely. i just looked up one day and said - why the hell is this thing here - and moved it out of the way. _________________ "i know philip banks": todd ellis

Found this on Wikipedia
"The voiced speech of a typical adult male will have a fundamental frequency of from 85 to 155 Hz, and that of a typical adult female from 165 to 255 Hz"
Not sure hi freq is a real issue.
I like my homemade one. Hanes nylon mesh direct from the factory none better.
I have both the metal and nylon mesh screen and I favor the nylon mesh for reasons previously stated. _________________ Esse quam videri "To be rather than to seem"

Then you should try EQing out everything above 3kHz then and see how your clients like it. _________________ Skype: globalvoiceover

Easy Chris, don't blow a gasket. You sound fine, babe.
But, this is why I work without a net... besides it get in the way. _________________ The Blog:

Lance
There is an allegation that metal pop screens don't roll off high freq.
Saying something with out backing data is just (IMO) a non supported fact. Facts are real and solid with real information that supports it. Until that it’s a claim
Given the range for the human voice, it just looks like a claim to sell a product with out any real data to support the claim. Do you know when the roll off occurs and how much. I have looked and can't find it.
I looked at the manufactures web site and can not find any test data that they have collected that shows the definitive difference. Maybe I just didn’t dig deep enough. _________________ Esse quam videri "To be rather than to seem"

It looks like I am moving in the direction of going completely filterless---like my heroes Todd Ellis and Bob Souer, Bill Campbell, Mike Sommer, and Bruce Miles!
Don't know if El Franko eschews the filter or not.... |

I just looked up the Stedman for the first time moments ago. Huh...interesting. I'll stick with my cheapie ($10) six inch, nylon fabric, clip-on pop screen from Musicians Friend. I use it with my 416 for two reasons only;
1) Plosives
2) Keeping spray and other airborne particles from hitting and accumulating on my investment.
The later is more important. At work we use RE20s, and they are absolutely hideous. It's a wonder any sound gets through them at all.
I get no coloration at all using my pop screen. |

At times I actually prefer the sound of the 416 with the foam cover on it!
Seems to warm it up a little....
Go figure..... |

having used both and sometimes completely going filterless i think both pop screens--nylon and metal-- cloud the sound. the metal filter, in my mind, also is problematic in that pings and reverberations result. still working the room, moving the mic, moving myself, moving panels. but overall, with good technique, it seems filterless is the best imo. _________________ sitting at #8, though not as present as I'd like to be.
