SLC Radio Icon Joe Lee has passed.

I never met the man, but his old news booth at KCPX was the first place I learned to cue a disc. The teletype in the closet was the real thing, no SFX for Mr. Lee.

He was doing voice work right up to the end. I heard him on the air just a day ago. What a void he leaves behind.

I knew Joe well. He was news at KCPX-AM when I worked at the FM side in the early 80's. He was unflappable and a total pro in every sense of the word.
There are many stories about Joe but my favorite is this one.
Joe have a very distinct voice and he was as good at rip and read as anyone could ever be. He would head over to the wire about 2 or 3 minutes before his airtime and grab the news, quickly pick a few stories and head to the mic.
In the early days, they were always playing tricks on Joe....if for no other reason than just to see how good he really was. This particular time they lit his copy on fire. Joe, the ever consumate professional, just kept reading until there was no more copy left to read. He dropped the burning embers after a short newscast and ended with his signature line. "This is Joe Lee reporting"
I am sad that I haven't seen him since and that I will no longer have that opportunity.
Rest in Peace Joe. You will be missed.
