OK - so I tweaked a quad in my lifting class last Saturday and then stepped up my dog walking activites despite the pain in the quad - so now I have a bigger pain in my shin - with some swelling too. I'm icing now, but I looked up shin splints up on Wikipedia - someone has to have changed this? If not, pardon me while I whip up some of that cabbage soup.

Well that might explain while I rarely suffer from shin splints. _________________ - Peter

LMAO - if that was the treatment then I wouldn't get them every few months. HAAAAA.
Connie, they are horrid but lots of ice after you work out is the only way to help. That and continuing the exercise. Here's my short shin splint story:
high school - run on beach in summer. Doesn't hurt. Switch to turf for field hockey in fall. Barely hurt. Switch to court for basketball in winter. OUUUUUUCHHHHH. Then the shins got used to it. Switch to pavement in spring because I'm a glutton for punishment. OUUUUUUCHHHHH.
College - rinse, repeat, recycle. Except now I have a college hoops trainer that tapes my shins before every game and practice. I never saw a difference.
Post college - gave up running. What? I'm not stupid. running sucks.
A year ago - took up running again. Paved track = shin splints. LOVE ICE! The treadmill doesn't hurt but it has shocks.
Oh, and through all of this, the thing I learned (because I did lots of personal training throughout) - running backwards builds up the muscles on the shins. That helps in the long term. Ice in the short term. I now do a lot of going backwards and haven't had shinsplints in months.
And that is the short version. For the long version you must supply the tequila. _________________ 006 member of the Sisterhood of the Traveling Mic. Bonded by sound.

Back in the early 80s (anyone remember the Jane Fonda workout craze?) I taught fitness classes for six years to put myself and first hubby through university. Anyone remember leg warmers? (the previous iteration, that is...) Happened during the 80s too - not a coincidence. Once I started muffing myself up with leg warmers, no more shin splints...
Hope this helps... _________________ Blue skies -- Lauren Lee
