Yesterday morning a producer called Jon called and asked if I was available for a session. He said that we'd met but I can't put a face to the name. We agreed a time, it was an ASAP session.

Script arrived and it was a commercial for one of the big banks, one of the few in the world with its own money as opposed UK or US tax money. Needless to say most banks don't say "put your money in our safe it's ***ing HUGE" the approach tend to be a little more subtle.

OK -CUE PB. I read out loud.

"Wow! I've never heard this script read like that before!" My initial thought was my approach was a bad thing and we were going to be spending a lot of time on this ad, I was wrong. Imagine someone you trust telling you about a problem that exists, explaining why it could be serious, then adding that you really ought to do something about it and suggesting where the solution may be found. That's what I did.

Every person who had read the script to Jon as it evolved dropped into Voice Overist mode regardless of the fact that none of them were Voice Overists. When I read the script I tried to sound like someone NOT a Voice Overist because as we all know Voice Overists get in the way to such an extent no one takes a blind bit of notice of anything they say.

Do you know, I'm so clever sometimes I scare Halibut!

Best single bit of voiceoverist advice I've ever received came from you, Philip. "Just let the words drop from your mouth." Simply brilliant.

But the words really drop from your brain. They just exit through your mouth.
