Guess that answers my question. I was pretty sure I wasn't going to fax the contract, but email this AM from Mr. Prettyman & the comments here have decided me. I like your email DB, direct & to the point.
I won't go into the way they treat talent, or their audition policy, or the way they book--although I could if cranky enough. _________________ Enjoy life, this is not a rehearsal.

All's I know is that I hadn't thought about SC in a while so decided to go to their website and poke around, but I keep getting timeout errors. Anybody else have that problem? |

Deebs, thanks for sharing this. It is simply amazing. Who do they think they are? And they want new business? Slavery went out of fashion years ago. _________________ Gregory Best

You go, Girl! I just cut myself free from a place that wasn't doing anything but spewing tall tales. Not as bad as what you had to read but the point is that these choices have to be made and I'm not looking back. _________________ 006 member of the Sisterhood of the Traveling Mic. Bonded by sound.

I just got a phone call from Studio Center confirming my address so they can send the termination paperwork. No "Thanks so much" or "Sorry you're leaving" or "Could we have done anything better?" Douches. _________________ Enjoy life, this is not a rehearsal.

Did you ask for it to be sent pre-shredded to save you time? |

Heh.
I got the same call.
I wonder how many (if any) other people are bailing as a result of this letter? _________________ DBCooperVO.com |

Well, I'll bite.
Money spent as a result of an interest bite from SC (getting ISDN, codec, building booth, Neumann, new interfaces n preamps, studio furniture, booth PC, LCD and audio monitors, etcetcetc) - probably about $15,000.
Auditions since getting on the roster (union only, since I opted to have a life), 2.
Auditions in the last 6 months, gigs booked and money earned: you take a guess.
Biggest bait & switch and I fell for it. Luckily I was planning to do a lot of this anyway, and even more luckily I had already earned the funds to do it so I did not go into debt, amazingly, but talk about a huge "dish of ointment" (as UK comedians The Two Ronnies would say). I also heard from other talent on the roster that they have a rate card for the non-union stuff, rather than paying going market rates, not sure how accurate that is, but if so, good grief!! And WTF!
Only thing I can think to think is, it's at least not costing me anything else to belong to this thing. I guess it really does reflect a sad state for VOs, since those holding the purse strings in many cases really are out for themselves and the clients, at the expense of the VOs who make their incomes possible. (and I lump others into that category too including some of the P2Ps who foster a lowball climate).
I don't mean to make this forum "Son of Savvy", but it's about time someone out there really showed us VOs some love...Perhaps the newer and hungrier casting places are the ones who are gonna make it happen for us. I just booked a national cable spot thru a VO-run firm that's only been live for like 2 months! And thru a "warehouse"-oriented one I seem to have gained a repeat client! So it's not all bad, but for SC to claim so much and fall flat, then issue such an edict, ain't so good for PR.
As evidence by this thread. Wh----Uh Oh! The Lt Gov is here! Wait!! No- - -AARRRRrrgghhhh - - -They're coming to take me away, ha-haaaaaaa!..... _________________ Chris Mezzolesta, Voice Talent

Here's what it has been like to be on SC's non-union roster. All auditions are due by 4 PM Eastern the same day--which is sometimes a problem for us West coasters. I asked several times to have my contact number changed so the schedulers would call me at my studio number during the day--never happened. They have a 24-7 policy for auditions & jobs, so they once booked me for a job at 6 AM at their LA studio (to add to the insult, I was on vacation). I asked them to please reschedule to a more reasonable time as the studio was a 20-minute taxi ride from my hotel--it was a major, major problem. I could go on--but why?
When I signed with SC I was newer to the business, and since then I've been asked to join other VO rosters. What a difference. I've discovered SC doesn't treat its VO talent with respect--and other rosters do. The other rosters I work with foster the idea that each job is a collaboration between the client, the talent, & the engineer. Everyone is respected, from the audition process to getting paid. It's a completely different atmosphere to work in.
Things are unsettled now, but I think we'll have plenty of work in the future when they figure out how advertising & TV is going to look. I guess places like SC will find their niche--but I hope not. Good riddance. _________________ Enjoy life, this is not a rehearsal.
