In the thread I began on Promo work, I provided a link to a compilation of rapid outtakes from Ernie Anderson's work for ABC. The compilation was mostly the 'F' word, with some other things sprinkled in.

In fairness, and to allow newbies to hear what Ernie really sounded like at his best:

Incredible Sundays, 1989

Some great 1970s promos, including a classic 'Lu-u-u-v Boat.'

Watching Ernie at work, long before digital audio & video workstations, 1989.

I'm sure you'll enjoy these.

Watching Ernie work was *awesome* - thanks for posting that !!

I worked with his voice for many years producing promos at Kiss 108. Had the honor of directing a few sessions with him, and he was a pleasure to work with. That wasn't the case with my Hobo Laughing, who then delegated the task to me rather than endure Ernie's mocking "then why don't YOU do this with your little 10 watt voice?"

ya know, I may be the only one here who thinks the guy comes across as a real ass. I understand he's a legend in the industry, but how you treat people and talk about their work says volumes about who you are as a person.

I had always heard that Ernie was the prototypical primadonna and big time pain in the ass.

I'm not defending Ernie, necessarily, because I didn't know him. But sometimes - especially when a person holds a position for a long period of time - how he or she is treated by others (or the constant submission of too much copy to fit in available space) begins to have an effect on them.

In this case, listening closely to the other voices in the room, it appears that Ernie's coworkers understood - and liked - him. No one fired back. For all his years at ABC, who knows what he had to deal with on a daily basis.

Just something to consider.

I watched Ernie Anderson on TV 8 in Cleveland as a kid (Insert joke here) when he was a crazy, late night movie host known as "Ghoulardi." This was before he moved West and was in demand for his imaging work. I didn't know him personally, but knew a few who knew him as a guy who showed up to get the job done, expected folks to be prepared, and set the bar pretty high for himself and those he worked with. I tend to separate his temperament from his professional abilities. He was one of the best. As for his "tart tongue," well, that's another matter. In my former life as a radio deejay, I worked with a few who would smile to your face then when your back was turned... At least with Ernie, you always knew where he stood.

What's most interesting to me about Ernie is how conversational he was, outside of the AFP stuff. Listen to those Incredible Sunday promos. Sure, he's got a big voice, but he isn't milking every word and pushing, inflecting and puking like many of the classic announcers did. He's just talking. In that respect, Ernie was way ahead of his time.

I once worked at a station that used Ernie for imaging. We never recorded live but rather sent him copy and he'd send back tape. And every tape we received back became an "Oh, my God, you gotta hear this!" moment in the production studio — not because of the imaging work (which was superb) but for the out-takes, the between takes, and the general nasty things said about the copywriter, the Hobo Laughing, the staff, our families, etc. it was both humbling and hilarious.
