Got a 2-year-old demo produced by another voiceover talent, but Nancy Wolfson says it needs a lot of work. (Plus my skills have improved drastically in the last 6 months.) Still, she said to keep the old demo until I progress through my training with her and then she'll do one for me. I suspect it will cost $1500 to $2000.
I'm eager for a better demo, but the price tag and patience are making me wait

That price is actually pretty reasonable! |

Peter - no doubt your collaboration was a success.
For your VoiceZam player you might want to label the takes with key words instead of product names. The search engines look for that. _________________ Playing for a living...

Peter, good blog post. I'm curious, why do you consider having an eight-year-old demo "sloppy" thinking? Is it because your voice changed over that time? Or your skills? Or the content was no longer current?

While voices don't change much over time, skills may be better or more focused. Content certainly gets dated. In some cases the style of delivery may be very different from what is being used today. _________________ Playing for a living...

If one is touting a car model that no longer exists that can really suck, and I've heard it out there.

I'm actually busted on that one (old car model - no date, but probably don't make them anymore) on some demos that are floating around. I can't keep up with them. _________________ Playing for a living...

Now that this thread is almost a month old, I'll share my 2 cents worth and then go to a neutral corner.
Yes I have a demo. It will be enjoying its 11th birthday this July. A PM friend at KFMB helped me glue most of the pieces together. But it was the majic of Frank "The Voice" Frederick who polished it up to give it a nice shine. This was all accomplished "pro bono", with great appreciation.

Favors are always a great way to go if you can get em! As lousy as my first demo was, my second one rocked. And it also didn't cost me a dime. For my first agent I was fortunate to secure the top vo agent in LA, who also at the time repped Orson Wells, Casey Kasem, June Foray, to name a few. As I was a poor 18 year old my agent made a few phone calls and was able to sway a producer buddy of his to cut me a demo for free. Ah, the good old days!
Bailey, the most important thing is that demo of yours is still getting you auditions and work. Good for you! But since many come to this forum for advice, I really have to go on record that an 11 year old demo is about 10 years too old. In the last 10 years ad trends have changed drastically. If you don't want a completely new demo every year, at least refresh it. Change the order, add a new starter, etc. If not ever year certainly every 2-3 years. |

Thanks Bob. You're too kind & one of a kind. The problem with getting a new demo has always been with the "man in the mirror". Thanks again. _________________ "Bailey"

OH, don't I know it! I'm very guilty of "do as I say/not as I do!" Got new commercial/promo demos last summer, and both were waaaaaay overdue! |
