I still use Skype completely out of habit for my daily client support calls, but I want to move my operation to Zoom. We at VOBS ditched Skype for Zoom 3+ years ago on suggestion of James Alburger, and we've been very pleased.
Source Connect Now is REALLY sweet and FREE, though, if you aren't needing to do a land-line call. _________________ If it sounds good, it is good.

George,
Are you subscribed on Zoom so you can make calls out to phone numbers or do you use the Zoom client on both ends.
From what I can see, using Zoom to call land lines is very expensive - I hope I am missing some information.

I have never used Zoom to make a call out, no. That's probably the number 1 thing keeping me from going all-in with Zoom. $2.99/mo with Skype to make calls works for me. _________________ If it sounds good, it is good.

I just buy Skype credit ($10 at a time) and it lasts forever -- I think it's something like $.02/minute to dial out. _________________ Always look on the bright side of life.

I was just thinking about Source Connect Now...again. Your other party can use it on android phones if they need to use a phone. Not sure about Iphone though. |

Same here, crapped out on me today after 20 minutes. Spent 15 minuted re connecting and re setting routers with zero luck. Luckially, it was just with a coach, who said it has been giving him hell since the update too.
Skype has worked just well enough not to find an alternative for me for years, I'm happy the balance has finally shifted enough to completely trash it.
Good riddance! |

Well, since first posting, I've had a few Skype-to-Skype sessions that seemed normal (no dropouts)... but I'm still leery of Skype-to-phone calls.
If anyone has any suggestions on how to call a cell or landline, with audio routed through my microphone, I'm all ears. I like the idea of using Source-Connect Now, but that would still be with only one other person, and my sessions usually have several people in attendance, in several different locations.
Why you have to ruin everything, Skype? _________________ Always look on the bright side of life.

So the takeaway is that the best alternative is Zoom.? ..which I haven't yet tried. Do both parties need the program? Is it easy for receiving party (ie client) to use? Thanks! |

Kristin -
re: connecting your booth with someone on a phone
you could create a Zoom session and then allow people to call into it with a mobile or landline. You can wire up Zoom to use your booth mic. With multiple people on the line, you are limited to 45 mins on the free service, but if you have a paid tier, then that is not an issue.
Also, Source-Connect Now does support up to 4 people. It's always been solid for me on multi-user connections. More so that Skype with multiple people on it. But, haven't seen a way to connect to a non-desktop-Chrome browser. (Don't have an Android phone to check with, but it doesn't connect to iOS). _________________ JimEdgarVoices.com | JustAskJimVO.studio | Source-Connect: jimedgarvoices |

Thanks, Jim! I will definitely check out Zoom... although the 40 minute cut-off is a little troublesome, and I'd rather not pay $15/month for something I don't use regularly (I use Source-Connect WAY more than a phone patch...)
I'm going to try to switch people to Source-Connect Now, for listening in. And I'll report back if I have another Skype-to-phone session. Fingers crossed... _________________ Always look on the bright side of life.

Source Connect Now does let you invite up to 4 people to a session.
So if everybody has a smartphone they can have the Chrome browser on it and all should be able to connect. |

Source-Connect Now will not work through a Chrome browser on iOS. Have tried it. Message states that it's an iOS limitation.
Someone will have to advise on whether an Android phone will allow it (I have surprisingly few friends with one... ).
And I don't recall ever having a Chromebookian on the line...
Oh... and if there's only one person connected to your Zoom session, it has no time limit. Haven't tried to run Zoom + SC-Now + Local Recording DAW at the same time. Might give that a shot if I've got some time. _________________ JimEdgarVoices.com | JustAskJimVO.studio | Source-Connect: jimedgarvoices |

I just had an hour+ call from my Mac to a land line on Skype with no quality problems.
I still hate their new a design however.

I just did an hour Skype-to-Skype, and we got to the end of the very last take... and the call quit.
...after which the producer called right back, apologizing for accidentally hitting the End button instead of the Unmute button.
So, one more bit of anecdotal evidence supporting the theory that the update MIGHT be okay.
Might. _________________ Always look on the bright side of life.
