How often have you read that? You've only ever read it on the internet and it is usually as the result of a post on a forum, in a chat room or as the direct result of the content of an email.

Now my apology to you. Sorry, the written word can reflect attitudes, emotions, motives, nuances and clarity is possible. How is this possible? Take your time, think and think again, take one step back then re-write. Should anyone choose not to take time and, dare I say, write well then they only have themselves to blame when they are understood, really understood. I don't mean misunderstood as it is often the case that brevity result in accuracy of perception.

"Sorry, you misunderstood me."

"No need to apologise. We're sorry that we understood you perfectly and it backfired. Now you're having to back pedal like a drunken Clown on a unicycle!"

Here on the VO-BB we are extremely lucky to have a gathering of literate, good natured, witty people who are turning internet exchanges into real friendships. I don't meaningfully contribute to any other website because I don't need or want 2450 networked connections on a multi-platform basis and I would prefer 3 real friends to 350 cyber friends any day.

Just a Monday - "Pause for a thought". Hope you didn't misunderstand Laugh

Yes, thank you, Philip. I completely understand. That is the same reason I don't host big parties at my home, preferring instead to spend more time, really talking, with fewer guests.

Well... that, and the cost.

Philip,

I'm very grateful for the several real friendships that have grown over the last 2 years as a result of being a member here. I'm grateful for your many contributions to my life and work. Portgordon, Charlotte, New York City or Carbondale. No matter where we live, we need real relationships.

Whenever I must write anything of import, whether humorous or grave, this is the maxim I keep as my guide:

Perfection is achieved, not when there is nothing left to add, but when there is nothing left to remove. -- Antoine de Saint-Exupery

[just a note: thank God for the internet! I could only remember the words "nothing left to take out", and so put them into Google.
I came upon this site about writing resumes:

Life is grand.]

"Nothing left to remove" -- so true.

When I was teaching English composition, I'd tell the students, say the most with the fewest words. Make everyone count. That is why I never demanded word counts from them -- you're sure to get "fill."

Skillful poetry, to me, is the highest form of communication for its economy and beauty of language. That, and music.

And, yes, the wrong words can "kill."

I think I've mentioned this before, but as a kid, I remember my father telling me:

"Don't ever put in writing anything that you don't want the rest of the world to know."

I think it was due to having gone through the war, but it was something he really ingrained in me. On the 'Net this is even more true.

And DB: I love that Saint-Exupery quote! Laugh

Thank you Banksey, for reminding us (me) of the value of friends. This little corner of the internet has developed a world of relationships which will last a lifetime (at least for me).

Toodles

When I was writing copy at the radio station I would sometimes tell the sales people, "If I have time, I'll write you a :30. If not, I'll have to give you a :60."
