...does anyone have any collective wisdom on how to approach cutting liners for radio imaging? I know it's not rocket science but am just wondering if there are any definite dos or don'ts with respect to this specific niche of the voiceover industry.....thank you in advance....the audition is for a modern rock kind of delivery.... |

Hmm, that depends on the station and management. Lately a lot of the Modern Rock stations generally aren't going for the ballsy sound. It's more of a low key read with a bit of smart ass thrown in. see www.stonevoiceovers.com for examples. _________________ Hart Voice Overs Blog

Deirdre's advice is the best. Also, see if you can get them to be specific about what they had in mind. Always use your natural range. I was hired by a News/Talk station and did a read as one would expect. Now they have me doing punch lines and even ad libbing. Fun gig.
Good luck!
**Thanks! I edidited my own comments. You're right. I didn't mean to call the guy I replaced a puker. He was not. It was just a different sound they were going for. Something to set them apart.

ah, so puking = Cheeseball "announcer-guy" voice. Isn't that the mainstay of radio imaging? Except for the few Jack FM stations who prefer nasally smart-ass guy. _________________ Jeff

I think there's a very fine line between good imaging VO and puking... but once you cross it it's very obvious. |

puking, ay there's the rub...in my radio days it was sometimes a combination between puking and that weird cadence southern preachers sometimes get into...but that's the feedback I was looking for, the reminder that puking is a slippery slope that is easy to fall into... |

As a Radio Imaging producer I agree with everything the folks before me have said. Let the producer "do the work"...deliver a clean, precise read. No more, no less. For Rock I would agree with the "smart ass" delivery as opposed to the balsy wolfman jack growl...that was sooooo yesterday.
Please pm me - or check out the website www.loudmouthimaging.com for a better idea of the sound you're going for. (As referred to in a different post, the demos are currently being updated and the site is getting work done...so bear with me! |

This may not be a popular opinion considering the man makes boatloads of money and is incredibly talented, but I think some of Joe Cipriano's promos are pukey. |

Should we ask Maiku about this?

Rob,
Try to be as unique as you can, try not to use the normal catch phrases that alot of imaging producers use. Believe it or not alot of the contracts that I have for imaging were awarded based on a different sound ( thats what the s told me anyway). I'd suggest listening to alot of different RI demos and get a feel for whats out there and adjust your demo accordingly. Personally I don't like using any of the SFX libraries so I make my own zings, zaps and music beds. Get your voice to sound BIG by either double tracking, whisper tracking, pitch shifting, reverb, delay etc... You might also want to delve into the world of vocoders, pitch correction and talkboxes alot of stations like that "robotic" feel on alot of their IDs and such.
If you need anything(sfx, sample liners which I have hundreds of btw, music beds,) shoot me an e-mail, I don't mind at all. Radio and Records Online has a directory where you can find alot of different demos for you to listen to.
As for the puking part of it... I actually enjoy constructing imaging packages from scratch. Sketching out a track sheet with the sfx,vox and overall content within :10 to :30 is fun to me. So I haven't puked yet.
