My Laptop fried so I got a new one. BUT my cd with Cool Edit Pro somehow got corrupted and will only let me run the Trail Version.
I used the 30 Day trial of Audition and liked it, but can't afford the $350 right
now. I am looking for less expensive programs like maybe Cakewalk or Sound Forge. Any suggestions?

I use SoundForge Audio Studio (version 9.0) and it does what I need.

Audacity is ok.
Check out ProTools LE some day. I'm hooked on the editing tools.
I started out with Logic 1.5, moved to Digital Performer, then ProTools. I like all of the plug ins that DP comes with, but man, the editing in PT rocks. When you add in the Waves package for compressors and other efx... wow.
Plus a ProTools session can be handed off to another studio that uses ProTools.
Ok, granted. I do more than voice work. My studio does a lot of small independent artists, singer songwriter stuff as well as audio for Alfred publishing and Workshop Arts, so I handle multi tracking and band mixes.
So PT may be overkill for VO work. but the editing. man. it rocks.
Ok, off my Bota box. resume normal activity.

I've been using Sound Forge since version 2 (it's now at Version 10) and was a beta tester for them through version 6, when Sonic Foundry sold the company to Sony. For simple VO work, the "Studio" (or light) version of Sound Forge might work very well for you and will be well under $100. You don't get all the plug-in support of the full program, though.
There are several others here in the VO-BB family who use Sound Forge, too; so you'll have several of us you can call on for help.
I've used Audacity on my Linux machine. It's a decent application once you develop some finger memory for the way it works. And it has the advantage of being free.
Since you're looking at Sound Forge I'm assuming you're using a Windows computer. Another relatively inexpensive application you might want to check out (though I've never personally used it) is Gold Wave; which is available for less than $50 I believe and can also be downloaded as a trial.

Thanks a million! I will look into Goldwave also. I am really disappointed that I can no longer use Cool Edit Pro, but since my old computer crashed and the new one has Windows 7, it's not compatible.

I use both programs and then import my files into Vegas for compositing. I have Audacity on my traveling rig, which makes it easy to record interviews, etc. when I need to. I like it, but you do want to watch out when using more than a few tracks in a file. The motto there is "Save early and often".
SoundForge is only on my desktop machine, I like its editing interface better than Audacity's, plus the plugins are pretty darned good!

I've heard good things about Reaper..I've also tried the demo, easy to work with, very good selection of plug-ins and only $60 for a "discounted" license...

| I use Sound Forge - the full version. Great program. Editing is a breeze - its batch processor is fantastic - and if you tend to record one long file you then have to separate into separate files - you can just drop markers as you record and have the program split it all up for you. The full version is pricier than SF Studio though - and I'm not sure what SF studio is missing. |

I strongly recommend Goldwave. Can do everything the others can and is user friendly and easy to customize.
