Anyone have any suggestions or recommendations for a travel bag to hold a travel rig consisting of Netbook/Macbook Air, Mic Port, average size travel mic, deskstand and cords/travel mouse? I found a standard size laptop bag that holds everything, but its still a bit bulky..

There's no getting away from the bulky with that amount of packing. You either have to work by depth, or width.

Yeah, these are expensive, but they're purpose-built, and well-designed for the job:

Namba Gear

I've got one of these, and I love it. Well padded, plenty of room for laptop, interface, 415, shockmount, cables, android tablet, and various chargers and digital accessories.

Ghurka bags are legendary for being tough, well-made kit. Highly recommended..... and the price is a steal. Wink

Serious protection... I've setup numerous kits with these with the pick n pluck foam.
Open it up and stand on edge and it doubles as an acoustic baffle.

The Namba stuff is nice, too.

Have had good luck with this, but it isn't tiny. Also can slide on top of handle of another piece of luggage. I wrap mic and other items in photographer's lens wraps--in bright colors, easy to find in bags, and protective.

Just flew from RDU to Tampa, and back. with a laptop, tablet, 2 interfaces, cables, mic ( long tube full of wiring) and full kit of accessories, chargers, cables, etc.....

And never once had to explain what any of the various pieces of kit were......

Either TSA is full of idiots..... or they knew I wasn't carrying anything that was a threat.....

+1 on the pelican cases ... bulky? yes. but tough as nails. i have a friend that goes to military auctions and he came home with a trailer-load of mil spec pelican cases of various sizes - rated for a 30' drop, air tight, water proof, pressure equalization valve - the whole deal.

I'm with George on this. The peace of mind you get with the extra protection these cases provide is worth it. I used a Pelican 1510 for some serious travel and never thought twice about it. The 1510 is a bit larger than some but I was packing a printer at the time in addition to the other gear (and spares).

Speaking of travel bags....

Don LaFontaine and his wife returned from a European trip. He said she filled up three extra suitcases with expensive purchases.

He said it took him all morning to pay for them.

Speaking of Don and Pelican cases, you do need to be a little careful. When he got his 1510 case off a cruise ship and opened it up, he discovered the screen on his Macbook was cracked! He had to run and buy a new Macbook in London. It was too tightly packed, and on a cruise ship the luggage gets piled 10 feet deep waiting to go down the belt. It was probably on the bottom of the pile and the center of the lid indented from the weight. We then learned to flip the laptops over, screen side down, to provide another layer of protection to the screen.

I learned a similar lesson about stowing my GPS unit in the glove compartment. My first one got a cracked screen from a stack of CDs that a friend had placed in the glove box with it. Now, my replacement unit always goes in face down.
