Hi Gang,

Although I don't participate regularly, I do visit VO-BB often for recon. I find ya'll very helpful, thank you.

Does anyone have experience with the Apogee Quartet or the Lauten Clarion microphone? I really need to know how good those pre's are in the Quartet, and if they compare to anything that you are aware of.

Thanks again,
Tom

I would assume the Quartet pre's are the same as in the Duet. If so, they have a reputation for being exceedingly clean and quiet.

I hear Bish runs a Duet.... Perhaps he'll weigh in on his impression.

As for the Lauten? That sounds like a question for Frank. Wink

Consider these reports regarding an Apogee alternative:

I can attest to the fact that the Duet 2 is very quiet and clean. I have used that interface since it was released, and it is very good for any mic/pre combo. If you find a mic and pre you like together, the Duet will accurately reproduce its sound without adding color or noise.

Don't have a clue about the mic though.

I'm very happy with the transparency of my Duet 1, and it's probably the only piece of kit I own where I'm not getting that occasional, uncontrollable urge to upgrade of change! In fact, if it were to go belly-up, I think I'd be temped to search for a used one.

Love the Lauten Clarion. Using it with a Duet or Quattro might not be the be the best choice however.

Clarion: Deep, rich, full bodied microphone. This is a bit too heavy in the bass, but I like the sound of the Clarion almost as much as the Lauten Atlantis. Almost. Biggest drawback is the tube life in this mic. The Clarion seems to eat tubes within about three months.

Duet or Quartet, nice pre's for most FET microphones, for a tube the pre's inside seem to amplify the grunge and transients. This is something you would have to work with. The Clarion has it's own -48v Phantom Power so you do not to worry about the voltage inaccuracies and inconsistencies in the Quartet (or Duo). The Apogee's are clean but almost too pristine for VO needs. They tend to be a little harsh in the upper mid's and non-resilient in the low bass frequencies.

Who else but Frank would know? Wink

yeah I have a Duet but I use it for the converters, not the pres. The pres
are squeaky clean. On my voice too clean.

Guess I should have clarified that I don't use the pres either...I use a DBX286A 286a. Not the greatest strip, but it works for me.

Thanks all for the input. I will have the Apogee tomorrow. I also have picked up a Neumann TLM49 and a Blue Dragon Fly. Along with VO, this should cover my needs for (some) vocal and acoustic instrument recordings too.
