Thank you all for great feedback. I've removed dairy from my life.

Now, as to why so many of us drink milk: a big part of the reason is marketing, some of which came in the form of very creative radio commercials produced by Dick Orkin and Bert Berdis during the 1970s. Two of them are here:

Those of us of a certain age, who were raised in New England, were indoctrinated by Big Brother Bob Emery. Every day, we would raise our glasses of milk in a toast to the president. On the wall of Big Brother's set was a portrait of President Eisenhower.

OMG. Durn tootin' he was big. His image takes up at least four wide monitor's worth of space on my computer.

That's 'cause milk helps you grow strong bones. cool

BIG Brother's picture has now been replaced with a smaller version.

And it doesn't matter if they're promoting rat poison as a dessert topping, I could listen to Dick & Bert all day. (You can tell those commercials are old; they're :60s.)

Growing up in Southern California, we had Engineer Bill. Every evening he would play Red Light Green Light. You’d drink your milk on Green Light and stop on Red Light. They’d try to trick you by saying ‘Green Sky’ or ‘Red something’. The goal of the game was to finish the glass of milk without drinking on the red light.

He also made sure you ate your vegetables so you would be a Sammy Strongarm and not a Freddy Phooey. And then you had the little engine that would push your bad habits up and over the hill. Hey, who needed parents when you had Engineer Bill!

And then there are those of us who grew up on the farm. There came the day when it was made clear to me I would arise early enough to do my share of the milking before breakfast and before catching the school bus.

And in this case, "milking" was a digital/manual process.... no fancy little machines in our milk-for-the-cheese-factory economy. And we were somewhere in the Ozarks beyond the reach of TV in the early 50s so I have no stories about propaganda on the kids video.

But I do have some colorful tales about class field trips in the mandatory Agriculture Class at our high school. We were trained to be pretty proficient at removing some appendages from farm animals. I bet Engineer Bill did not have a red light and green light for THAT topic. Embarrassed

No, but it might get you a job in Hollywood or on Wall Street, negotiating leveraged buyouts. Wink
