A common studio accessory is made with a rubber O-ring.
After only two years, the O-ring dries out and breaks.
The manufacturer wants to charge for a replacement O-ring.
Thoughts?

Size? Dimensions, thickness, what is it made of?
Lowes, Home Depot, Amazon. Homemade using silicon and glycerin (or cornstarch - for a harder finished product).

I'm sorry; I should've been a bit clearer.
I was asking whether others thought it fair for a manufacturer to request payment to replace a part in something only two years old. Because I'd worked many years ago in auto parts, many of which use rubber components that last much longer than two years, my expectation in this case was that a replacement would be sent at no charge.

Audio parts do not sell as Auto parts. They do not need to be replaced as often.
As such, manufacturers need to make money somehow. Charging a huge fee or such an innocuous part is how they pad their pocketbooks during these (since forever) difficult times.

"Fair's got nuthin' to do with it." But a lot of companies, esp on the boutique side of things, are happy to replace small parts for no cost or the cost of shipping. A few examples I know of are Avalon, John Hardy (outstanding customer service), Manley, Vanguard (super), and Triad Orbit (also outstanding). These are premium products, and so the cost might be built in to some degree, but such outfits seem more interested in old-fashioned standing by their gear.
You might also try asking for an exception to their policy. Sometimes it even works.

i've had it go both ways - paying an outlandish price for something that should have lasted longer - and getting free stuff when i thought i was going to have to pay.
example 1: you know those little plastic "holes" that go through a boat deck to insert a ladder, etc, into? i had one of those crack after only a month --- i paid $17 for a new set.
example 2: the pocket clip on my benchmade griptilian sprung & would no longer fit tightly in my pocket after more than 6 years of hard misuse. i was happy to buy a new clip --- instead, benchmade sent me two new clips & six new screws for free ... within 48 hours.
i try to follow the "benchmade" model in my business. if i have a good client who works with me a lot - i don't nickel & dime them with every script change or re-take - even if it's not my fault. it's nice to hear "don't worry about it - no charge."
when it goes the other way -- i guess them's the breaks.

O-rings are pretty cheap. Take the remaining ones (or remnants) to one of the hardware stores mentioned and also buy a few spares for future use. Maybe you need a slightly bigger size or a thicker ring? They come in dozens of sizes. Keep 'em in a baggie and they'll last a long time.

Are these O-rings as most people are thinking of them or are they shock mount bands? Not that it really makes a difference to the question being asked...

I'm thinking of the plain rubber o-rings that are found in plumbing fixtures. If it's the cloth covered elastic bands that's something else. The hairbands that women use are the same construction but finding a size that works for your mic rig might be tougher to jury rig*.

Hey! I resemble that remark!
Seriously, you can get them on cards at CVS... either the popular Scunci brand or CVS own brand. Many sizes are available, and yes... they work just fine... even linking them works well if you need to get imaginative... $5 for 60 CVS Beauty 360 brand "Ponytailers Medium Hold". I would recommend the "Heavy Hold" for an LDC though
