Hi all - just checking in to see how the West Coast VO folks are holding up with the brutal heat wave. though I live in the Boston, MA area I have Oregon roots and still have family out there.
So...how are you all handling the heat? Hoping that it breaks soon for you! _________________ "What was that? An exhibition? We need emotional content." - Bruce Lee, Enter The Dragon |

Just like we do with heavy snowstorms we’re hiding out at home. We have whole house AC but during Saturday’s 108 it kept us just below 80. Sunday and Monday we’re forecast to hit 114 and we’ll be interested to see how it does. Our all time record was 107 by the way. Many Portland area homes don’t have AC because it’s rarely needed. That’ll change now I’m sure.
Yep, climate change is a hoax.

It's actually been far worse. Low 100s is pretty much what we call summer. Plus, 100 degrees in LA is far easier to take than 90 with Midwest or NY's humidity. |

Yesterday was projected to be in the mid to high 90s in the Seattle area and I believe it registered as 107 at one point. Definitely toasty!
The house we live in came with whole house AC and generally it fires up 4-5 times a year. Yesterday afternoon it fired up and just stayed on for several hours not quite keeping up. Today and tomorrow will likely be more of the same.
The kids are loving more frequent popsicles though. |

90's this week in the swamp of southern illinois ... 66% humidity today.
it's a wet heat, like walking through a velvet curtain soaked in tapioca pudding. _________________ "i know philip banks": todd ellis

My family was in Ohio for a wedding last week and that's EXACTLY what it felt like: walking through a velvet curtain soaked in tapioca pudding. My daughters had perpetually curly hair for the entire trip. The whole experience was very moist and sticky. |

We splurged on a hotel for 3 nights. With the heat forecast to hit 113-115 in Portland, OR and a 35-year old a.c. that can't keep the house below the low 80s when the temp hits 100, we bugged out. Left the a.c. running and fans on for the cat, and we drive over in the mornings to do household things and check on her but...nope. Hotel a.c. has been a godsend.
Next year the damn a.c. gets replaced.
Edit: Math and grammar fix.

I just got home from driving up from SoCal to see my folks in Seattle and spent time in Portland/Newberg. Can't believe that it's 20 degrees cooler here than there.
Glad I missed the heat. Mom and Dad I think have moved down to the basement for a few days. _________________ We have nothing to fear but fear itself.
Well, that and mimes.

Normal house ac can only drop the temp about 20 degrees. |

That tracks. My wife reported it was roughly 80 in the house most of the day. Given the alternative of triple digits - none of which are 0 - she was pretty happy about it. The comparatively significant temperature drop today might give those poor compressors a bit of relief. |

Ocean breezes won the battle last night and brought the temperature down 40° in a few hours. Still going to reach the low 90s this week but that beats 116° by a lot!

Yesterday topped out at 116.2 F outside at my place, with an indoor high of 90.3.
I, for one, am glad it's over.

You and me both, Karyn.
I was grateful for the a.c., but hotel life got old fast. |

I really feel for all of you on the West Coast. My fondest memories of going back for family visits in Portlandia was how nice the summer weather was...in the past.
I'm hoping for a cool streak to come your way soon! _________________ "What was that? An exhibition? We need emotional content." - Bruce Lee, Enter The Dragon |
