It is hard to believe that just one person could be responsible for most of the spam in the world. However, ever since that guy in California (?) was arrested I have noticed a remarkable drop in the spam coming in these days. My Spam catcher had only 4 messages in it this morning. That's a first. Amazing.

Not so exciting here. My email account tied to this board has gone from about 42 spams a day down to 38. Sigh.

Whoever invents the ultimate spam killer deserves a medal and their own island paradise.

I believe it... and my spam intake has dropped dramatically.
No... he wasn't from California. He was from the Seattle area... read about it HERE.

I think somebody is trying to pick up where he left off. I just trapped a message that said "We can send Your Ad or Website out to MILLIONS Of Our Double OPT IN List of Email Subscribers and get you great results by providing the most effective way to reach your target market. Email advertising messages are sent to 100% Double Opt-In customers. These are people who have specifically requested to receive your email advertising offer on your unique products and services."

When people specifically request emails from me, I'm always the first to hear about it. I'm surprised this person believes otherwise.

Tom,

Should I ever encounter any sardines (with our without saltines and hot sauce), I will be happy to send them all your way.

What exactly do the Spam Kings of the world get from spamming? Do they somehow make money? Or just smug satisfaction at bedtime that they've effed millions and millions and millions of people?

Sadly, spam is effective despite making so many people angry otherwise they wouldn't do it. Frown If you consider the sheer volume they send, even a 1% conversion rate would equal a lot of money, especially considering how cheap it is for them to send the spam.

Spam gets nowhere near 1% response rate.

The fact is, many spammers are themselves the "victims" of spam in that they are lured into thinking they can make Big Money sending spam out to entice people to buy this or that. For the most part, these people don't send out repeat mass mailings because they don't work.

But there's always some new guy who thinks he can make a million bucks by doing next to nothing...that's why those ads in the back of the Enquirer / World / Sun / Globe have been successful for so long.

I just received word about a new spam technique called address harvesting.

The Harvester sends fake inquiries out to members of online business communities in hopes of getting an answer from you. If you get a
message from a harvester' and respond, your address will probably be sold
to businesses who send unsolicited commercial emails, commonly known as
SPAM.

On these inquiries the 'inquiring person's' email addresses look like this
tdmghawks+i79585@gmail.com or similar. They all have the member's email or name in their email address. it is impossible to block them all.

As always, unless you are sure that an inquiry is legitimate, it is wise not to respond to a request designed only to get your email address
for an illegal purpose.

Harvesting has been going on for many years...it's one of the main reasons spam today is as bad as it is.

Not only from guessed e-mails sent out, but from websites...this is why I always encourage people not to have any direct e-mail links in their websites. Much better to have a dynamic form (not a form with the recipient e-mail address embedded) that does the sending so harvesting bots have zero chance of getting the recipient's address.

Spammers have started form spamming more...where a bot finds a form on a website and submits it with spam content. Dynamic forms can easily discard most of these as many of them put URLs in every field, even name fields, so they're fairly easy to filter out.

We've certainly had our share of that dynamic spam crapola here!

That's the reason for the virtually closed board.
Even with the closed gateway, I've had bad guys try to register.
Amazing!
