Whoa, hold your horses on that one... I think you need to "Deep Six" the Snowball and put that in the mail for a refund.
Think "Centrance MicPortPro" (about $129.00 USD). I have not written a review yet, but of the tw tested, this one shines and you use your normal, regular, everyday mic - only the M converts it to a USB mic complete with pahntom power and a comfortable pre-amp.

So Frank, this would replace my PreSonus Firebox that I use in my portable set-up now, correct?...A LOT less to lug!

Yes, it could. I am actually going to give it a real try "on the road" this weekend. I will be taking my Neuman with me as I spend the next three days out of town, but I will be checking in here once in a while.
Let you know the results, when I return.

It almost sounds like you are trying to talk into the backside of it. I wonder if they have the capsule in backwards? |

Ah - a backward capsule...it does sound like it is far away. I sent an email to the seller (eBay Buy it Now) about the issue. We'll see what he says! I also sent an email to tech support with the file after talking to them. _________________ Playing for a living...

In Audition. go to "options"..."windows recording mixer"...adjust the "wave in" for more level.
Not a fan of that mic. Very honky and nasally sounding to me. Samson C03U
sounds very good for VO. $68, free shipping from Sweetwater. _________________ www.asapaudio.com |

Frank,
When you do your review, I would be interested is seeing or hearing how this little interface works coming out of a processor...say my 528e.
I'm assuming you would want to just leave the gain low and use the pre-amp in the 528? Or, would I use the line input, process the signal, then use the pre-amp in the micportpro?
Since I'm not an expert, nor do I play one on tv, I'm guessing the signal needs to be line level or pre-amplified before it hits processing?
Sure is a cute little gadget...looking forward to your review.
Thanks for taking the time to do it.

Well, well, well...couple of things I discovered.
1. I needed a technical guru to help me order my new laptop so that I got a sound card with ASIO - mine apparently doesn't have this. I discovered this when (after the Snowball didn't work) I tried my AKG and pre-amp on the new laptop using Audition 2 and got bad latency problems.
2. I initially tried the Snowball with Audition 2 on the new laptop and got that weird distant sound with noise. Then I tried it over on my regular recording computer with Audition 1 and got the same sound.
3. Took Audition 2 off the new laptop and installed Audition 1. This time the Snowball worked - volume good.
4. Then I recorded with my AKG and pre-amp on the new laptop using Audition 1 - good sound AND no latency issues.
Compared the two mics and the AKG sounded much better (I guess this is a "duh")
So, until I get back from my two-week road trip, I will use Audition 1 and my AKG and pre-amp. Then new laptop is so much lighter that there really won't be any big issue with weight, just extra cords.
However, I am still not getting the Snowball to work on my regular recording setup - perhaps there is a conflict with the mixer? I have too much on my mind to think about this right now - just glad that I'll have a mic and software that works... _________________ Playing for a living...

I've got a Blue Snowball, using it on a Dell computer (X, and SoundForge. No matter what I do, I can't get the gain up high enough on the mic, even after I downloaded the gain booster from Blue.
So, it looks like I'm going to need to get another, better mic (USB) to use in my studio here. Did anybody else ever figure out how to boost the gain on the BSB? _________________ Charter Member: Threadjackers Local 420 |
