My questions:

Can you use the Telos Xstream as a phone patch? If so, what mode and how do you work it or have it setup? Do you dial out or does the client have to dial you?

If you have to do special things to make it work, can you share this info with me?

I asked a good pal this question recently, who in turn asked a friend who has an Xstream and I kind of got half the answer I was looking for. Just wondering what others do and what your set-up is that works best.

Thanks in advance!

Ben

I have Skype on my Mac mini in the studio and clients dial up the Skype phone number and listen to the magic being made. Wink

Telos Xstream can be used as a phone patch. You need to set it up to send and receive G711 ? 8 khz Mono (something like that). The client can then dial in or you can dial their landline.

Let us know if it works, ok? It would be great to use it that way... I was wondering about that myself.

David,

Would you please elaborate on how that works?

I haven't used Skype, but am considering it.

Is the Mac mini just running in the background with the internal mic and speakers or do you have it in your recording chain?

Hi

I have a pretty simple set up mic - mixer - firewire card - Mac Mini. I have set up Skype to take the signal from the firewire input as its sound input. Very, very easy to change in Skype Prefs

You will need to get a Skype In number which in the UK is about £10 for 3 months or £30 for the year. Thats it....the client calls you on your Skype number, you answer, they listen and you make a bit of sparkly magic which you record to you application of choice, send to them in their desired format = sacks of cash!!!!

It should be a piece of cake.

I would add one thing...tempting as it may be, don't use the Skype number as you main business number, I have heard rumours of users having their numbers changed and it would be a pain to have stationery printed only for the number to be wrong. My number is only used for phone patches.

I don't seem to have this setting on my Xstream. I wonder if this is a firmware update thing? If so, I want it. The lowest I can go is 54kbps and 34 kHz. I tried to call in G.722 send and recieve and in 54kbps and 34kHz and it did not even ring the line or anything. Just a fail before anything even happened.

I guess I will call Telos and ask them.

Thanks for the Skype idea, David. That would seem to be a great alternative should this not work on the box.

Update:

Called Telos and they instructed me to press the Dial button and change the Mode (second option under the Number line) and change it to 'Phone'. It worked like a charm. Received a call in on my first SPID and everything was perfect. The call does not give a ring tone to the dialer, it just connects through. FYI.

I don't seem to be able to dial out though. It stalls out at 'Preceding and then does not ring the line. Hmmm. At least I can receive incoming calls on it.

Just an update for anyone that was wondering.[/i]

Ben, can you dial out at all under any setting?

If not, you may need to double-check your long-distance pick.

DB,

Yes, I can dial out and receive via the normal ISDN connection modes. However, for some reason when putting the Xstream in Phone Mode and trying to use as a phone patch, it is not working when dialing out. Incoming works fine. I will try again to see if I made a goof in dialing or something.

Thanks again to all who had info on this one.
