This morning I was trying to do some work before work on my system. I plugged the MBox2 into the firewire and started up PoToos (old joke). Everything was working fine and I was able to open up the session I was doing last night before bed. Mind you that was only 7 hours ago and I am the only one that lives in the apartment so I'm guessing no one snuck in whilst I was sleeping and messed with anything. So as I record enable the track, I got a buffer error that has decided to make a regular appearance on my system that my H/W firewire buffer was full and I needed to take out some attachments. Which is ridiculous because I only have the one firewire port and it had the Mbox hooked into it. So I closed down PT and restarted. Same error. So I tried that again. Same error. So I pulled the firewire plug on the MBox. In retrospect, probably not the smartest thing to do because I heard a thunk in my ear phones and when I went to to start it up again nothing. Did I mention I hadn't turned off protools? So now all I get is a blinking light on my mbox and protools is telling me they can't find the mbox and there is no phantom power for the mic. Please tell me there is a simple elegant fix to this problem that doesn't involve buying another interface or heaven forbid another mbox. Thanks in advance!

Hi Pam. Pretty sure your Mbox is still OK. Shut the PC down. Plug in the Mbox and re-start. The "thunk" was just the Mbox powering off.

Pam,

You got me confused here... the Mbox2 has USB, no firewire... unless you have a VERRRRRRY special version?

Mbox 2 Pro I'm guessing Edo. That one's Firewire like the 002.

yes gentlemen, I have the mbox2 pro version. The sweet Mr. Souer called me to suggest I power everything down as well and then start over. Which I will do once I make it back home in our sub-zero temps we are having (betcha didn't know Chicago was colder than the North Pole yesterday). Cross your fingers that is indeed the case.

On another note, why do you think I'm getting this buffer size message? I replaced my RAM and hard drive, upgrading both in size. Bob seems to think it might be something in my disk allocation settings which I will also look at tonight. But if anyone has any ideas of what else it might be, I'd sure love the help.

You might try defragging your hard drive if you haven't done that in a great while.

Stay warm Pam!

What you can also do is delete the map "Digidesign Databases" from your system drive, the culprit could be in there. No worries about deleting the map, it will be rebuilt fresh as soon as you fire up PT again. And defragging means defragmenting the harddrive. After a while you have a drive where bits and pieces of files and software get scattered all around, like you're looking at a Swiss cheese with holes in it. It is caused by saving new files and deleting old ones leaving a 'blank'. Defragmenting uses up all the blank space in between, and puts het file's bits and bytes next to eachother, making the drive heads faster because the read a file in a single ruin instead of having to do multiple reads to gather all the scattered bits.. it can make things run considerably faster, thus less like to cause any errors.

ok, that sounds cool. How do I do that, defragging that is. I just like saying defragging. It make me sound smarter. I think I'll work it into my everyday language.

For PC

Go to Accessories under the All Programs button on your Start menu.

Find Systems Tools Folder and inside that is the Disk DeFragmenter. You should optimally run this in down time with no other programs running.

Could take an hour or more to do depending on your system.

Smile
