i bought what's supposed to be a higher-quality tube for my MXL v69me way back last summer, but have held off doing the replacement after reading how tricky it was.

as one of my "git 'er done" projects of the new year, i just started it...and am stopped dead by the two tiny screws holding the diaphram onto the frame. both screwheads seem to have stripped in my efforts to turn them (and yes, i was turning the screwdriver the proper direction, though i don't blame you for wondering).

i have an inquiry in to dr. bill campbell and another friend. meanwhile, anyone else have an idea of how i can work past this? i only have one small phillips head screwdriver, and i'm reluctant to go spraying the mic assembly with liquid wrench.

should have left bad enough alone, eh?

well, while you're waiting for the REAL Mic Mechanics, maybe you could relax and remember the days of yesteryear with Mike & the Mechanics

thanks, scott. it was music to accompany success.

another friend suggested applying the liquid wrench product with a q-tip. that was enough to do the trick.

i believe the tube swap has been performed successfully.

i may have to demand a refund, though. the new tube does sound better, but i don't seem to sound anything at all like don lafontaine!

thanks, todd

the replacement tube is a GE 6072A 3 mica. i had bought it after getting recommendations here (probably from you).

i didn't do a specific a/b archival recording, but might be able to dig out an old voicetrack somewhere that i didn't clean up in post. the original set-up seemed to add a very low layer of noise which sounded like i had a central air vent going...even when i had the heat/ac turned off. many of my isdn clients didn't notice it, but it bothered me a lot.

overall, i can tell the new setup is quieter just listening to myself in the booth over headphones. and it does seem to put out a little more gain. i'm still experimenting with the gain trim on the board.
