You'd think a dealer would know better.

He sells 'em. He should know how to pronounce Hyundai. It's Hun-day, not Hun dye.

That is all. [/mini-rant]

"He" is the big local Hyundai dealer (as well as selling many other makes).

I agree that generally, one would see "dai" and pronounce it "die". And I know that many regular folk do pronounce it so. But this dealer is one of the biggest in the area, which is why it stood out to me. I remember back when Hyundai first started selling cars in the states. One of their ad campaigns was centered around the theme that the name "rhymes with Sunday".

This mispronouncing of "Hyundai" by the dealers themselves seems fairly widespread. I remember when the cars were first introduced to the U.S. the ad agency went to great pains to let everyone (dealers, radio & TV stations, etc.) know the correct way to say it. Nevertheless, I frequently hear commercials from numerous dealers in southern New England -- including ones with singing jingles -- pronounce it "Hun-dye."

I also remember seeing something on the Discovery Channel about ship building and, when talking about the shipyard in South Korea, the narrator referred to it as "Hyoon-dye."

Interestingly enough, about 20 minutes ago we received a $^$%$^@*# telephone call from the local Hyundai dealer where my daughter bought her new Tucson. And wouldn't you know..."Hi, this is Mr. X from Empire Hun-dye..."

Grrrrrr.

I narrated a movie for this particular car brand, and the far east guys in charge there at the recording session INSISTED that I pronounced the brand name like they're used to in the land of origin....

Hee-OON-die

Smile just to add to the confusion here... and prevent misconception...

Furthermore... Hun-day is fairly 'close' to Honda...

And I've heard more than one Hyundai owner referring to his/her cars as a Hon-dye. Go figure. Smile

A Japanese car company wanted to find the perfect name for their new model. They hired the man who came up with the name Volkswagen. After all, what better name for a car than "people's car"? The company flew the man in from Germany, gave him a tour of their factory, and then laid out all their marketing plans and ideas for their new model. The German gentleman promised that he would take all of that into consideration, but would also want to do a series of focus groups and other research to find the perfect name for the new auto.

"Perhaps we did not make ourselves clear," one of the Japanese said, "We need to have a name for the car by day after tomorrow."

The German raised his eyebrows and exclaimed, "Dat soon?"

Shocked

I had a Ford dealer actually gave me a script that said, "Mustang, the shape of things to come", which was the Triumph TR7 slogan at the time.
