Though our avatars might betray us, I like to think our discussion was a rather peaceful one.

I Appreciate the feedback.

It's amazing how Demos get shorter and shorter. Mine was done back in "early" '08 when it was okay to have a 1.5 minute demo.

I recently met with an L.A. area Demo graphics/duplication house and the man I spoke with liked my Demo but noted that every spot sounded the same, production-wise. There wasn't any difference in compression or quality to make it sound like they were done at different houses. Perhaps moving things around -- like the suggestion of moving the hospital spot near the front -- might help me until I redo the whole thing.

Regarding my graphics, the man wasn't blown away with what I had designed but added that when looking for your first Agent, most Agencies could care less if you have a nicely-done graphic or a simple graphic with nothing more than a little color and your name. And anything except the CD and jewel case are superfluous and will be tossed aside.

As this is my commercial demo, I am beginning to agree that my cat idea might be better suited for a character or animation Demo.

Do you want to use your CD to get an agent or to get work?

dang it right --- what a fun day - sorry i missed it!

lorn - i like the concept of the kit - i even like the vintage tape recorder and the mic - the cat ... i don't get. maybe a cafeteria plan sort of approach - with images - pick one from column "a" one from column "b" - etc ... cassette deck, RTR, 8-track (for example) - i think it has the potential of being clever.

It hasn't been okay to have a commercial demo >1:00 for as long as I've been in this business (4 years). Audiobook demos yes, other demos no.

Of course, if your cat is Spaghetti Cat, it's the NOT getting it that makes it work so well.

@Jeff... In answer to your question, I want my Demo CD to get me work. The agent is a plus.

Hi Loren,

What you wrote above is contrary to what I've heard / seen with agents and agencies here. Just like it's important to a v.o. to show off their best work, agents like to show off their roster. At agencies and studios in this area anyway, it's not uncommon to see displays or bookcases with a bunch of CDs on them representing talent. CDs with lame-o artwork are turned spine-out. CDs with good artwork are turned face out.

So while the CD art may not make or break your ability to get an agent or work, having good CD art could, in fact, help quite a bit. Obviously the demo material itself is of primary importance, but anything else that engages somebody to make them take a longer / second (or even first) look & listen is a good thing and shouldn't be underestimated.

@Lou... You make a very valid point. I'm not the "name only"kind o guy so why should my CD graphics not reflect who I am?

When I visited with the design studio, there was a huge wall filled with CDs facing out. Many different kinds of graphics styles. While to me it seemed like the various designs were random and varied, the guy I met with pointed out how the designs actually reflected what kind of person was on each CD.

As this is a fairly straight up Commercial demo with only a hint of my character work, perhaps I can tone down the graphic I've already created so it reflects a little bit of my funny/unique side but still conveys that I can get the job done.

And, this is kind of a strange thing, but I imagine some people here will back me up on this: While it's always possible that a given piece of artwork will offend somebody's sensibilities, I think cats are potentially more dangerous than other things (except maybe microphones wearing hats) as they seem to be more polarizing than a lot of other animals...there are some people who just HATE cats.

For the record, I'm not one of them, but I know of such people. I'm just saying Wink
