Boy, this really takes me back to the days in the mid-late 90's when MCSE's spent their time bemoaning all the "paper" MCSE's that were flooding the work market. The logic was "just because someone takes a dozen tests and passes them doesn't mean you necessarily want them working on your production servers". That may be true, but it depends on how much work they put into studying for those tests as well ashow much previous hands-on experience they've had.

If someone does "Vacuum voice" work and someone's actually willing to PAY for it, then so be it. It sounds like it's probably work most of you wouldnt have wanted to do anyway, right?

Just .02 from a bottom-feeder... Inoccent

There is the integrity issue, too. Many of us likely have been in a sitch where we must weigh whether or not to take a job when the pay sucks (like the vacuum) and, as someone said earlier in this thread, boy is it tough to up your rates when you're bottom-feeding.
As far as voice talent in other countries with nary an accent, so be it. occasionally I do phone promnpts in Spanish and wonder what Latinos think about my accent (and they probably don't care much if the call is being recorded for quality purposes). Esta bien todo.

Interesting insights, I particularly Banksay appreciated your analysis, I need to be honest, as a newbie who's read a lot and done precious little I suppose that I am a little on the skeptical side in general on all this. That being said I do think that a workman is worth his wage, which is the point that Banksay and other I think are trying to make. So perhaps the real question then in protecting rates for V.O. work is this, how do I as a buyer codify that the person or persons that I am considering for a read are in fact qualified to turn out an acceptably excellent product? anyones thoughts?

Simple....

You either trust that their demos are legit or you have them conduct dry audition for you...

For those talent who do not tend to do auditions for smaller projects, simply ask for professional references.

The process you have entered into is no different than a job interview, do your due dillegence and pray that you have made the right choice. Rolls Eyes In some cases you'll get burned, but in most you won't (provided that you have done your due dilligence).

Keep in mind however, that v/o's, while we want work, we tend to not take too kindly to being grilled and asked to provide reams of paperwork to support our talent... listen to my demos, read my resume, talk to a couple of references if you are so inclined (I have never been asked for this), and if you really want to send me a script for either a dry read or phone patch audition.

Simple process, however in many cases, easier said than done.

You find out who their previous clients are, listen to their demo and ask for an audition.
