|
|
As you have probably heard -- a U-S airways jet with 155 passengers and crew aboard made an emergency landing in the partially frozen Hudson river off midtown Manhattan, (about 11 miles South of my home.)
The cause is under investigation, but the plane evidentally was struck by a flock of birds, likely Canada geese and was disabled.
NO ONE WAS KILLED!
The reason for the good outcome is the pilot, Capt. C.B. "Sully" Sullenberger, who made the decision to abort in the water, not take the chance to make it to the nearest airport, in Teterboro, NJ; a very densely populated area. A miscalculation could have been a disaster. This pilot also brought the plane down with perfection, keeping the wings and fuselage intact so the plane floated. Then, reports say, he walked the cabin twice to make sure no one was left inside.
Also credit goes to New York ferries, water taxis and emergency personell who responded immediately. The passengers barely got wet. _________________ http://MichaelSchoen.com |

I saw the report popping up as I was zapping past CNN this afternoon. A major bow to flight safety procedures and well trained captain and his cabin crew. Still can't believe everybody was more or less unharmed. |

This is just so amazing to me. In so many ways. Strangely I thought of this board and how we are all saying 2009 is going to be a great year. I guess it is in different ways all over the world. _________________ 006 member of the Sisterhood of the Traveling Mic. Bonded by sound.

Yep, New Yorkers really pull together when the going gets tough.
Amazing.

It was done with flair (landing flair more at http://www.erau.edu/er/newsmedia/articles/cont10.html)
One when I was a reservation agent for Piedmont Airlines (they merged with US Air) I and others were asked to assemble for a potential downed aircraft call bank. For about 30 minutes I had the worst knot in my stomach. Thank god the plane was located and all was well.
I also use to have a share in a small plane and held my license. As someone with some understanding of how a landing is made, hearing Wolf Blitzer blathering about the landing onCNN made me right ill.
On eye witness said “at the very last the plane nosed up to gain altitude” you can’t gain altitude with two dead engines. It was an intentional maneuver to keep the engines out of the river as long as possible. The pilot did what is called a landing flare. It’s used in landing to bleed off speed and it gave the jet a tail down first contact. CNN and the rest of the experts never did put two and two together. That maneuver and the quick response of the ferry captains and crew saved the day.
Hurray for quick thinking Captains, airplane and boat. _________________ Esse quam videri "To be rather than to seem"

Incredibly wise decision not to try to put down at Teterboro. Runways at Teterboro are too short for the corporate jets that use the airport now. In recent years planes have run out of runway about once a year - a few years ago a plane took out the back fence, ran across busy Rt. 46 during a.m. rush hour and took out a warehouse across the highway. It was lucky no one was killed.
Teterboro wasn't meant for corporate jets much less commercial airliners and it's surrounded by residential neighborhoods that could have been wiped out. Teterboro has gotten way too big for anyone's good and in the past year or so jets departing the airport have decided they're too important to have to wait their turn to get clearance through Newark's airspace so they go VFR sneaking UNDER Newark's airspace flying barely 500 feet over MY HOUSE. And I'm not close by. I'm towns away.
THAT'S why I moved the studio to the basement.
THAT's why I rant when Teterboro is mentioned.
Wise, wise decision by the pilot. An incredible job. A reminder that the actual flying isn't the real job of being a pilot. It's knowing what to do in a split second in situations like this. I'd fly with him anytime. |

Melissa,
Tell us what you really think about that airport, OK? I, too, was riveted by this story. Needless to say, since the plane was coming here to Charlotte, it was a big news story here, too. As far as we've been able to tell, none of my co-workers were on the plane. Bravo to all who helped make this such a successful rescue. As the Governor said yesterday, a Miracle on the Hudson. _________________ Be well,

So now following a miraculous day we can say to people "We had a 1/15!"
By the way, late last night the FBI rounded up every flock of Canada Geese in the USA and shipped them off to Guantanamo Bay. |

"Sullenberger's law" named for the pilot of U-S Air flight 1549.
Opposite of Murphy.

don't believe him, people. i dodged plenty of the goose poop today while walking fozzie on the neighborhood golf course.
i mean, it'd be sheer torture for the geese if they were shipped to gitmo.
i, too, found this plane in the river story amazing, as much so as the cool cucumber pilot. _________________ sitting at #8, though not as present as I'd like to be. Hello!
