Here's what I wrote to Tod, my IT God:

Quote:
I am still trying to bring my message board into the world of phpBB3 and the conversion of the old board is giving me the pip.

Regular punctuation and some latin-language characters like ń are turning into typographical soup. I've set everything under the sun to utf8 including the converter script. If I do the cutover the recommended way, the posts that have the clunked-up characters are truncated.

For instance, the phpBB2 board shows "Hey Gang— I will be moving this message board"
The phpBB3 board shows "Hey Gang—"
...and that's it.

I've got the framework to display correctly after using Cyberduck for an FTP client.

Here's the phpBB.com community board thread about this deal:
<http>

One thing I tried was setting the MySQL connection collation to utf8_general_ci AND the database collation to utf8_general_ci.

I still got wild characters for all the dashes, apostrophes, quotation marks, parentheses, etc. BUT the whole post was present. (I think that was the combination!! I'm trying to replicate the result to no present avail)
Is there a way in phpMyAdmin to run an SQL query to fix all that shit?

I am pretty much WTF about this. Not only that, but the new board runs slowly. I'll have to see if John Worthington has the install for the phpBB3 version he's using for Jack's board— it's older, but slick as a whistle.

Here's the process I've been using:
Use phpMyAdmin online to back up the database of this board.
Run MAMP here on my laptop to create a database server.
Install phpBB2 and load in the database. (bigdump.php)
Install phpBB3 and convert the phpBB2 board.

This is where is breaks.
The new board framework is all UTF-8 for its character set, and I'm guessing that the character set issue is the trouble, but I cannot figure out what specifics to use, if I'm messing up the backup when I use the online phpMyAdmin. I'm trying to make sure everything is the same, including the charset value in the bigdump php script. But I'm still getting fracked up when it converts to BB3.
I must have tried 30 different permutations of database/script character encodings. (UTF8_bin, UTF8_unicode_ci, UTF_general_ci)
And I don't know what the "connection collation" is, so I don't know if I'm messing with stuff I shouldn't.

Can anyone here give me a hand?

Lou has been in touch!

I'm hoping Tod or John W will have a moment to spare this weekend.

In the meantime we're safe and sound here.
