Regardless of how you voted or what you may feel today about the transition of leadership in the U.S., or the many historic moments, including--for the first time--2 women at the helm of the Inaugural Committee, this is a momentous day (an understatement).

I am at this moment happy to be alone, as I weep with joy and respect for a country often perceived as racist, narrow-minded, and war-mongering. Look at the number of average citizens who made the march to Washington simply to be there! And when I came to this forum, and saw the picture posted today, right there in the upper left hand corner of your screen, I wept again. What a glorious day!

What a great day for the US. I get choked up myself every four or eight years at the peaceful transition of power we Americans get to witness and be a part of - yes I shed a tear myself today. And Magpie, you know how I voted. Rolls Eyes

Today it all starts anew.

And may I just say Aretha was awesome!!!

Apart from the very moving address, one of the most extraordinary moments was watching the current President and First Lady standing with the former President and First Lady, chatting and laughing while waiting for the helicopter to arrive.

This is indeed a great country.

Oh, and the Reverend Joseph Lowery - what happened to our "wub" emoticon??

Yeah- I'm having trouble pulling away from the TV today. I love seeing so many happy people all in one place! It would be cool to be there.

Like Mary- my favorite moments were seeing the 4 of them together, it made me very proud!!

I'm one of those "nonbelievers" that President Obama referred to, and even I thought that Reverend Lowery gave a great benediction -- it was humble and humorous all at once; it would be cool to meet him someday. He brought chuckles to both of us as we watched the ceremony today.

As a non-specific-believer and strong nonbeliever in some of Rick Warren's positions, I was pleased overall with his invocation and its inclusiveness. Maybe the powers that be will shine even more light on his heart. And yes, Rev. Lowery is a hoot.

As emotional and proud as I am about President Obama taking the helm, I think I'm even more hopeful about the goodwill this will foster with the other nations and peoples of the world. I'm so tired of us being feared and despised, and lately appearing weakened and careless. Not good. Not the us we're supposed to be.

Here's to a better country and a better planet.

My Dutch Friend, it is not so much that we think we own the world or the map... it is that through our actions that we have moved and shaped the world and we continue to do so right now.

That's not necessarily what we set out to do so, but our interactions with the world have lead us to be the leading power on the planet. Not the leader of the planet, but the most watched, respected and feared country. Look at the recent economic problems; the U.S. sneezed and the rest of the world caught a cold. A lot of countries look up to us for inspiration and financial help, and yes, even moral guidance. More people want to move here than any other country for many reasons.

The world has trusted us to be a shining beacon of the right way to live and govern. We have violated that trust by our recent governmental policies of greed, disrespect, unneeded violence, etc. We Americans have changed our leader and we will now change our policies for the better towards all other countries on the globe. Our new President has said so. If we can regain that trust and heal the wounds we have created, won't that be better for the whole world?
