Hey all, I need your collective advice about professional head shots. What are the latest trends, ideas, color, black n white? What works inside or out, clothes, what to avoid, props etc? Any advice and suggestions will be helpful.
Thanks for helping....

You want a headshot to look how you would look on a good/great day.
You want to check out photographers and their work and who you feel comfortable with and what is in your budget. Do you want them to supply a makeup artist or do you want to do your own? They could take 500 shots but all you need is one money shot.
As far as props go, personally I would avoid. You want to draw attention to you and not be remembered for a prop. It's about you.
Most headshots are being done in color. Some will say whatever is best. Most headshots are done in digital these days so they can always change it.
As far as clothes go, you and your photographer can decide on what colors and bring some different clothes so you can try out different shots.
Good luck

Additional discussion can be found here...

There have also been other discussions as to whether a photo is necessary on a VO website... I haven't found that discussion in search. _________________ "Bailey"

Head shots are handy to have, even if you don't use them much. I needed one for the AFTRA catalog, they sent me to ClairPhoto in Cambridge, MA. Nice to have a clean, professional looking image to mask my dark, sinister side.
It's not on my website, but i use it on Linked In and Facebook.
Here's the final result of my session with ClairPhoto:

Ask your agent who sends you out on visual gigs what they want to see. And they usually want to pick from your composite sheet for you.
Color is pretty much required these day. I still see more outdoor than indoor shots for actors and the opposite for models.

I was just afraid that the first one showed too much gum.
My wife liked it though.. but I'm a terrible judge of my face. _________________ Company, villainous company, hath been the spoil of me...

P.s. I like the B/W one better -- your smile is more genuine in it. Must have had a breeze under the kilt when that one was taken.

Six words about head shots, specula highlight, neutral background and high key lighting.
Jeff’s head shot has all that going for him. The little dot of light in the eyes is the specula highlight. If you look closely you will see that it is in the upper portion of the eye. That has been the preferred place to see the highlight for some time. It is very likely that a reflector was placed below the face to bump up the light into the eye socket area. Lastly the light back ground does not compete with the talents face.
Get yourself some sparkle in the eyes, (high in the orb) high key lighting with a light neutral background, put on the game face and you are done.
And one more thing go for Color. _________________ Esse quam videri "To be rather than to seem"

I think Caryn got a lot of ideas from these, so I'm bringing them back:
