Yet another VO article, worth reading for this alone:

Quote:
A mentor once told me I may do a fabulous audition for a voiceover job, and I may not get the job because I may sound like the ex-girlfriend of the casting director. It can be very subjective, and I have a healthy sense of detachment from it. I give my all, but I don't let any criticism eat at me."

A must-have skill for VOs as well as actors. Do your damndest, then put it out of your head. Easier said than done, but necessary.

I've seen casting directors nod off, or check their e-mail, or chat with friends during an audition. (A small percentage, to be sure.) Gotta let it go.

Hell, you ain't been distracted until the casting director at a video audition is nursing her baby while she's taping you. She's an Earth Mother type who doesn't bother to cover up while she does it either.

I'm not bothered in the least by public breast feeding, but while you're trying to clinch an audition? Try looking the camera in the eye when that's going on just a foot or so away.

Voice audition. Philip prepares himself in the voice over booth. Lee the sound engineer sets everything up so I may do my thing. Director picks up his phone and starts talking.

Lee "Philip, a little bit more for level please".

Philip (in a loud clear voice) "He's busy he'll call you back!"

Martyn the director puts the phone down "The client says, that sounded great, the gig is yours....You cheeky bast*rd!"

Lee is on the floor in tears holding his sides for fear of them splitting.
