just came back from a session (which i thought was an audition, but i was actually booked for it through one of my agents... can you imagine the surprise).
anyway - the gig was for a :60 radio and a TV spot (i think the TV was :20 or :30 - dunno - my lines were short). After recording the :60 radio they were unable to edit to create a :30 so the director asked if i can go back in the booth and voice the :30 from scratch. i said, "sure."
of course, i always follow up with my agents after a gig (or even an audition) and i told her what happened and she said, "so that's 2 radios, a :30 and :60 and a TV then." If she wants to go to bat for me then why not... right?
what's your opinion on this?

She's right. I would even suggest that the edit of a 60 to a 30 would count as two ads. |

I'm not an expert on VO billing, but from a purely business perspective. You were there....you performed the jobs you were hired to do and totally fulfilled your obligation. Through no fault of your own, they were unable to acquire an additional spot by editing, and asked you (not expected you), but asked you to do an ADDITIONAL recording. You deserve payment for the additional recording. If you purchased a product that say, you would normally be able to modify and thereby acquire an additional useful item, but after buying it, you discovered you were unable to do the modification.....you wouldn't go to the company or the store and expect them to give you an additional item for free. Maybe a bad analogy, but the point is there. You deserve to be paid man. _________________ TG2

Hellz Yeah, A-Men.
You voiced 2 spots for radio, and a TV spot. PLUS you "helped write" the 2nd radio spot.
They should pay you for 3 plus a bonus.
A cookie at least. _________________ DBCooperVO.com

thanks, guys. that's what my initial thought was.
btw, db - the :30 was already "written" it had words from the :60 copy, but they just couldn't get it to flow - the "voice music" was way off and not cohesive.

Totally. Lots-o-spots, lots-o-bucks.
By the way, we are right now here today breaking our record for most users on the board at one time. |

LOL - no i mean that they had the copy in the studio when i got there. they planned on editing the :60 into a :30, but weren't able to do it.
for example, if the :60 copy had:
"Mary had a little lamb."
and they tried to edit it to follow what the :30 copy said
"Mary had lamb."
It didn't work - so I had to go back in there and voice "mary had lamb."
Makes sense now? I'm not complaining about billing for two, but i just want to make sure it's clear.

even if Mary had no lamb |

Anthony,
FWIW... My agent tells me I should ALWAYS call them after a session to confirm what really did go down. I've had circumstances just like you described and my wallet got a little fatter for it. Plus, the clients have never complained about getting a call from my agent to review the session. It's just good business!

Thanks for your input guys and keeping my business mind grounded in reality.
The good thing is i can't remember the last time I billed anyone directly for anything and i won't have to do it this time either.
Since November of last year, all my pay has come from agents, personal managers, or the voice-guy for whom i produce the club spots for (he bills the promoter and then pays me for production).
very cool to not hove to worry about collections, but in this case I had to make sure i was doing the right thing.
And good to see you've had the same thing, Dave.
