I was wondering if anyone had used one of these.

It looks like it could be pretty handy if you don't have a completely dead room, you can at least deaden the space around your mic.
I been thinking about making one, but trying to figure out a compromise between having a sturdy box and being able to have flexibility to position a mic stand through it.

Anyone tried this?

I've put them together for a quite a few people. It really depends on your mic and space, but it can make the difference between an unusable room and workable. It won't keep out noise from the outside, but it can quell bad reflections and resonances. You can build one cheap for $20 in materials. What do you have to lose?

I have a bunch of Auralex Studiofoam (2' square) and Roominators (1' square) left over from my booth build. Is there anything easy to find I can use to put one of these together?

Edit: I have read Harlan's article, can't seem to find the particular box he uses. Anyone else have an idea?

Yes, if I was still drinking regular coffee I could have blamed it on no caffeine, but that post just did not come out like I meant...posting too early I suppose!!!! Google to the fore when I get back...

They do seem rather handy. My vocal booth is not made for soundproofing at moment. More to just deaden the sound, but there are still a lot of reflective surfaces around. I think these would do the trick.

I am thinking just making a hole in the bottom with a straight mic stand through would be easiest way. But I was wondering if there may be another way people do it to get more flexibility with mic placement.

I found nice things for this at Carrefour. Pretty much a linen lined box with thin wood inside. If you read through the 2nd DIY link, there were a couple of suggestions there. I'm sure taking a walk through IKEA, you could find something suitable.

Harlan uses the Whitmor Collapsible Cube available through Amazon but the seller is Target. (must be their brand).

The funny thing is that when it displays "Customers Who Bought This Item Also Bought" there is nothing but acoustic foam, portable mic stands and books by Harlan Hogan. The cube has been officially re-purposed.

They come in sets of two if anybody wants to split a pair.

I have a bunch of the cubes and foam here, will sell you the materials at nearly cost, if you want a one stop shop.

I've read about them before. Haven't thought of it for awhile, but with the issues my room has, the cube may help a great deal.
I may just take you up on that Soundgun...

For all who have PM'd me about the materials, I am putting together a list and will send to each of you. I am just catching up today after being out of the office on jobs the last 3 days.

Liz... Why did you choose the CAD Equitek e1002 mic? Just curious.

I just finished my first one. It didn't come out as intended though. The box looked right when I started, but seemed smaller and smaller as I went along. This is only mic that will fit in it due to the size. I wanted to put a mic with a shock mount inside, but then the stand needs to go through at the back of the box, leaving it very unstable. I can't think of a way to do that and support it yet. But it is fully adjustable on the mic stand.

Here are a few photos.
