Curious if anyone uses a voice booth, what kind, cost, pros and cons? I'm looking casually for office space and the "right" room, but know a voice booth might be an option if the space demands such (or if I can't find the perfect, small, acoustically lovely, quiet space). _________________ sitting at #8, though not as present as I'd like to be. HI Bettie - Jeff McNeal has a vocal booth, pics are in the archives somewhere and rather swish
When I have recorded in places with vocal booths there has still been background noise of fans, electrical outlets etc., so although I'd really like one myself just so my hubby doesn't have to tiptoe around when I am recording, the cost is prohibitive at present and I have a nice quiet room most of the time anyway. |

when i first started building my studio i ordered a 4x4 booth from vocal booth dot com. ooops - should've done more research. it cost me about $2000 with the bigger window option and the delivery they used was crap. the guy refused to take the packing materials after they had specifically told me they would.
it works fine, but i had to enclose it in another space (like a booth within a booth) for it too really dampen sound, plus it's on the side of the office building away from traffic so it's damn quiet in there.
Anyway - i visited my friend's basement studio (and don't let that phrase trick you, because he runs a full HD3 system and Mackiu d8B system, etc.) and he ordered his from whisper room... MAN - it kicks my vocal booths ass! The quality compared to mine is top notch, the lamp is quiet, and the floor is solid and isolated. He paid more for it, but i would have as well if i knew then what i know now.
Nothing beats having one built for you (buy a pro who does this for a living), but for ease of set up, whisper room is my choice.
Also - you'd be hard pressed to find a mid-level studio with a really acoustically isolated booth (heck even some high-end studios i've been too have leaks), but aim for as much isolation as possible.

There are other threads already covering this topic. Try searching. My experience from vocalbooth was markedly different than Anthony's. I've very pleased with mine. Additionally, the driver took all the packing materials so I had no issue there, either. They make several differnt levels of sound isolation and the more your spend, the greater the noise rejection. For the money Anthony quoted, it sounds like he got the Silver vocalbooth, which is their entry level model. If I am incorrect, apologies in advance, Anthony.
I bought the 4x4 Gold demo booth they happened to be selling at the time. It arrived in excellent condition. I don't use the lamp the came with it, since I read off a flat screen monitor in there, but the light they provided makes no noise, electrical or otherwise. The ventilation system works well to circulate fresh air into the booth, but I like things on the cooler side when I record, so I had a professional tap into the A/C duct above the ceiling and run a 4" duct right into the fresh air intake box.
If I had the luxury of time when we moved into our new home, I probably would have built a dedicated booth within the room. But I had to do my last ISDN session on a Friday, and have the new studio up and ready for the next ISDN session on the following Monday morning, so the Vocalbooth turned out to be an outstanding option, especially since the one I wanted was on sale for hundreds less because it had been their demo. I think that having the booth delivered wound up being close to what it would have cost to build a dedicated booth myself, so for my particular circumstances, it was money well spent. But what a manic weekend that was! Moving an entire household, then having to assemble an audio desk and booth and have it all wired up, tested and working in record time. Whew!
I had bulldozers and jackhammers making noise for weeks while our backyard was being put in, and my recordings were never interrupted as a result, so I thought that was pretty impressive. However, if you have a room adjacent to heavy truck traffic, jet airliners, etc., bear in mind that you're going to have to dish out some serious money, one way or the other, to isolate the lower frequency rumblings. |

Whisperroom.com and SoundSucker.com. Both make excellent booths. My Whisperroom is an older double-walled 4x6 model and depending on your usage requirements, you may find they pay for themselves rather quick.
Always check the BBB before you commit the funds.....
