I've just been asked if I have an "APT box". Since I don't know what that is, I'm assuming my answer is no.
However, can anyone tell me what that is?
Thanks!!! _________________ Caryn Clark... The Hip Chick Voice!

Caryn,
APT is a different kind of ISDN protocol (not compatible with the Telos and Musicam boxes most of us have) so in order to connect your client would have to arrange for a bridging service to connect you. I've done sessions like this for clients in the past and it works great. George Whittam (Soundgun) has connections with a company that provides that kind of bridging service, I think. Dave Immer at Digifon does it too. _________________ Be well,

Thank you. I called them to say I didn't have that, and they said it didn't matter, they were going to use a different studio b/c it was "old technology."
Thank you very much Bob!!!! This place is fantastic!! _________________ Caryn Clark... The Hip Chick Voice!

APT = APTx
Commonly used in the UK, but very uncommon in the USA because of the unique protocols.
That said, Source Connect Pro (for an additional $500.00 USD fee above the $1295.00 suggested retail price tags offers IP to IP APTx.

Created by a very nice company in Northern Ireland. (mundane fact of the day!)
It's not really used much for VO work in the UK, but quite a lot of radio stations use a single-channel version of it for audio contributions such as Traffic News. With a single channel you can get reasonable quality, and it gives very low delay. As soon as you move up into using multiple channels, it sounds terrific. (mind you, so does MPEG L2 if you use 6 bearer channels at the same time!) German studios seem to like it a lot. _________________ Charles Nove

Yep, Outofhear has an APT box sitting on the shelf, ready to go if the demand arises. Hasn't yet...
APT has their own codec called APT-X, different from the commonly used MPEGL2 used on the Telos Zephyr and Musicam Prima, among others. The codec is well loved in the music industry, and Source Elements offers it as an add on for SC Pro. It's highly unlikely you'll ever be asked to use SC with APT-X for a VO job, at least currently... _________________ If it sounds good, it is good.

Yep. I purchased an APT-X box "The Reporter" some 14-15 years ago. I was given the impression that a production house who shall remain nameless, required it. Wrong. They decided they wanted to go the Zephyr/Musicam route, which of course was a much more sensible way to go.
So for all these years I've been equipped with both my faithful Zephyr, and the APT-X (a $5000 paper weight, that's what they cost back then). I'd love to find a use for it, but I'm not holding my breath.
