VO-BB - 20 YEARS OLD!

...does anyone know if there are any differences between the two for phone patch purposes?

I'm looking at a 1202 and a 1202 VLZ....the 1202 is older (circa 1995)

Not that I'm aware of... The VLZ model had improved preamp circuitry, but the rest of the wiring/routing was very similar. Assuming you're just using a line-in to route to the phone patch, I don't think you'd notice any difference.

For the VO user, there will be almost no difference. I would stick with at least the VLZ or VLZ Pro (not the oldest original model).

After some additional research, it looks like the 1202 doesn't have an Alt 3-4 bus, which the VLZ does have....

I'm hoping the VLZ will have some decent pre-amps as well..

With each update to the Mackie mixers, the primary improvement is the mic preamps. Yes, the ALT 3/4 bus is the key to making these mixers create a mix-minus for phone patch and ISDN use, and is the reason they work so well for VO artist studios. Alesis and Behringer copied the design, so they have the same feature now.

ah, my good ol' Mackie 1202 VLZ STILL in use after 13 years or so.. indispensable little bugger that just keeps going and going and going...

Not a fan of the mic pres at all though, despite the 'improvement'. Compared with a standalone mic pre, very noticable difference for the worse. Haven't compared with the VLZ Pro.

Don't know if you had a chance to try it. Just a few weeks ago I discovered by accident that this little unit works amazing when plugged into the second input on my mbox and the line out plugged into one of the monitor jacks on the back of the mbox and I can record the caller on a second track. I do this when working with my coach. It is no JK but it works really well especially for the price.

Okay so got the 1202

The pre-amps aren't bad at all, to my ear....but it picks up a lot more line noise(either from other plugs or my computer) than my main pre-amp.

Any suggestions?

Okay, hold the phone, looks like lowering the input on my Apogee Duet to 0 db does the trick.... Smile
