When giving the direction "I would like an emotional read."
Be sure to make clear what emotion is to be expressed.
It might save some time.

Wait, Dan. You mean there is more than one emotion? Oh boy. I'm in trouble now. _________________ Be well,

Since I have more than a few years of acting classes, including a master's degree in Theater -- add to that coaching, a few years on the NY stage, and then spent many years of teaching acting to kids, directing kids -- I have a few thoughts on directing. As a voice actor now, I do mostly self-directed work, but I often miss having a good director.
It's about communication -- the vision for the work, commercial, narration, animation, whatever. It's also individual to the actor -- how each of us, as ourselves, react to different stimuli. How I react to my son just having lost his cell phone (or that nightmare scenario Monk gave us) or some such thing, varies among different personality types -- as that ubiquitous direction "conversational, like you're talking to your best friend." Put that in my head, and you might not get what you expected.
Skilled directors have a clear vision, have cast the right actor to support that vision, and then the ability to get the best work out of him or her. _________________ Diane

When I get "put some emotion into it", or "a little more emotion please" it usually means become less the narrator and more of the person who witnessed or was involved in the material, but if they just say "I'd like an emotional read", then working out some guidelines would be nice.

We're always going on about how Voice Overing is really acting. I'm pretty sure when someone says "I'd like an emotional read," what they're really trying to say is , "Less reading and more acting, please." _________________ Lee Gordon, O.A.V.
