i'm building a steady-cam rig similar to the merlin unit - but for somewhat less than the $800 retail price.

i think i have a solid design, but i'm having trouble finding a fluid-enough ball joint ... any of the brain trusty have any ideas???

One that I've built in the past used a joystick from a video game controller.

I just cut it up and make it work. It worked quite well actually and it only cost me about 12 bucks at best buy since you don't need all the bells and whistles.

Todd

I believe you need to think about a Gimbal Ring and not a Ball Joint. The ball joint is intended to transmit motion in a angular line. The Gimbal Ring is meant to keep thing perpendicular to the earth.

Some where I have a SteadyCam JR that I am going to re-configure. The Stage you posted is identical. The Sled part is what I need to change.

Its the two axes of the Gimbal that makes it work.
