Interesting. I've been using Open Office for about three years now and haven't had any issues dealing with anything Microsoft.
If you're inclined, shoot me a PM or e-mail and let me know what issues you've run in to... |

(general reply here to each of you that said this, quoting CC out of convenience)
Are you downloading and saving your docx file first, then trying to open, or trying to open from the website by clicking a link? If the latter, download the file to your desktop, then try to open it. I get regular calls from clients and customers that they have "can't open" problems, only to find out they're not downloading first. |

Typical Technical help: "Basically YOU'RE the problem."
I've emailed about the DOCX issue, too, by the way.
So after reading this thread, thought I'd do the patch. It seemed simple enough.
I downloaded some Windows updates in order to get the Office compatibility pack, including IE 8.0. Not a good choice.
I couldn't launch ProTools!
I uninstalled IE 8.
THAT Problem solved. sheesh!
Still have the issue of opening docx. What's a girl to do? Maybe try Open Office, I s'pose. _________________ Bobbin Beam

Nothing major. Just some layout issues with tables and such. _________________ Jeff

I can see that that's what they are, but what I don't understand is why, when I click on the link to download 1234.docx, it gets saved to my computer as 1234.zip. If it were named 1234.fred (even if the contents and structure of the file indicate it's a zip file) it should be saved as 1234.fred and if I want to run it through a conversion program or rename it, that should be my option, not something that is done for me.
As I said, I just change the file extension from .zip to .docx and everything works fine. It took me a while to figure that out, however. _________________ Lee Gordon, O.A.V.

Lee,
My guess is that it has something to do with the way your browser is configured to handle ZIP files. The same would be the case with others on this thread with similar problems. (I always right-click and choose "Save Target As" on the file name to download. This method pretty much always leaves the file name intact when the file downloads.) _________________ Be well,

There's also some advanced features to do with collaboration that didn't work properly in OpenOffice last time I had need of them (primarily collaboration and tracking editing changes over time). But, for 99% of everything else I've used OO for, it's worked like a charm. If you're not typesetting or tech editing a book, I don't think you'll have any concerns with using it as a replacement for MS Word. |

I have Word 97 and I may have had to download a plug-in from Microsoft's website that allows that version of Word to access .docx files. But I really don't recall. |
This worked perfectly Lee! I didn't have to change the extension, since the .zip wasn't visible in the file name. I just added .docx to the end of the file name and it saved it as one file.

Just now, this worked perfectly for me, too, Lee.
Phew! since it was an accounting of my work.

I've got the new MS Office, so I never have a problem with .docx
....but I ALWAYS take pity on everyone else when saving and sending .doc files by saving it AS .doc instead of .docx.
.doc is still the defacto standard. If you get a .docx file, kindly ask the sender to save it as a .doc file for you and resend it (if possible).

Hi folks.
Long time no see - hope you're all well!
The problem is their site, Lee, not you
Yes, DOCX is the new default format in Office 2007, but the reason people have trouble opening them from that site is because they likely have their MIME types configured wrong. They're probably configured as application/x-zip-compressed instead of application/msword or application/vnd.openxmlformats-officedocument.wordprocessingml.document, which would explain why some folks can't open them and others have them saving as a ZIP file.
As has been mentioned, if you're on a Windows system and don't have Office 2007, but do have a previous version of office, you can install the Word 2007 reader as part of the Office Compatibility stuff. Download it from here.
Also, Bobbin, I know it's easy to blame Microsoft / Windows / IE8 for not being able to launch ProTools after the update, but that's a ProTools issue...they should not be doing anything internally that would be affected by an IE update for cryin' out loud. It's bad, hacky programming on the part of ProTools (and I have no specific beef with them since I don't and have never used their software). _________________ Lou Zucaro
