Have any of you coached transgender patients or know of anyone who has? _________________ Tom Dheere - The "H" is Silent, but I'm Not!

Honestly, I would think they should wait until their voice has fully completed it's change. Just my opinion. _________________ Caryn Clark... The Hip Chick Voice!

The basic principles coached would be the same. Any particular methods that would be 'gender' specific would depend on the direction the transgender individual is headed. I'm not aware if the 'physical process' affects the patients vocally. _________________ "Bailey"

I think also maybe, you have to think about the way of emphasising the words. Sometimes men will say a phrase one way, but the same phrase may be said differently by a woman -- whether the tone, or choice of word to emphasise in the phrase, etc.
Good luck! _________________ Intuit and do it!

Allow me to clarify!
My best friend works at a transgender clinic. You know, the place where they turn boys into girls and girls into boys? She asked if I know of any voice coaches who work with patients to help their voice match their new gender. I assume hormone therapy has an effect on their vocal folds but my friend wouldn't ask me about voice coaches if that's all it takes.
Now that we're on the same page, do you guys know any voice coaches with that kind of experience? _________________ Tom Dheere - The "H" is Silent, but I'm Not!

My best friend's sister just became her brother... and yes, the hormones taken most definitely affect their voice. My friend has mentioned that her brother's voice is getting low.
I don't know that he's seeking any voice coaching though. I think he's letting things just happen. _________________ Caryn Clark... The Hip Chick Voice!

None of the folks I know who have made the change seemed to care about coaching.
I think Stefania might be onto something, though— learning about idioms and whatnot. The way the different genders describe stuff. _________________ DBCooperVO.com

A Speech Therapist should be able to help. Many hospitals have Speech Therapy departments. ENT's ( Ears, Nose, and Throat Specialist) also can refer people to Speech Therapists. |

As much as I'm thrilled for people to get paying work, I'm thinking mimicry is the best self-teaching. Find a voice you want yours to emulate and listen and talk back. Watch movies with your favorite actor/actress playing a normal person (not Tom Hanks as an Eastern European trapped in an airport), or find an audio book reader you like. Recording your voice and listening back from time to time certainly might be of help.
Acting and scene study classes would probably be quite valuable, especially if the teacher/director understands your goals and wants to help.
Also they need to realize that even with hormone adjustments most baritones can't become sopranos or vice versa.
And after writing all this I Google "transgender voice therapy" and there are dozens of helpful sites.
OK, so maybe there is an employment opportunity here.
