I learned something today that seems really silly on the outset but then I realized others might learn from it, too.

The proper pronunciation of invite is not IN-vite but in-VITE. I have been pronouncing it wrong for years (off and on, as sometimes I know I've said it the proper way) and no one has ever corrected me until a client did so today. I was very grateful.

So perhaps you can learn from my years of mispronunciation.

I've always said "in-VITE" for the verb "to in-VITE someone to something"

BUT

Colloquially the verb has in the past decade or so, also turned into a noun:
"Thanks for the IN-vite"...but again that's more a colloquial usage and not technically correct...at least I don't think so.

Ahhhh.....English can be SO confusing!

According to the American Heritage dictionary which is what we used when we were teaching phonetics and diacritics, both pronunciations are acceptable, but have different grammatical usages:

in⋅vite  /v. ɪnˈvaɪt; n. ˈɪnvaɪt/ Show Spelled Pronunciation [v. in-vahyt; n. in-vahyt] Show IPA verb, -vit⋅ed, -vit⋅ing, noun

I do radio and TV ads for a Federal Bank in the Midwest and they insist that I pronounce it with two syllables instead of three: fed-rel.

Sure I'll mispronounce it for them. Hey, they help me pay my Fedrel taxes.

Of course, we can't forget 'Vetrans' (veterans) Day.

And the current 'tempicher' is 72 degrees.
