How much would you charge to narrate a virtual tour video and how? By the word, minute, or page? Would you apply a volume discount of some sort since this type of work is likely to be done in bulk?

Perhaps you could consider "per program". If most of their descriptions are about the same length, this would be the easiest for the client to consider, and then you wouldn't have to mess about with formulas every time.

As far as I know, these don't pay much. I've heard as low $30 per program. including production, so your success with a bid kind of depends on what they're used to paying. If you're the first guy in— make it worth your while.

i would definitely propose a bulk, or retainer type arrangement (with a cap). you can afford to come in a little lower that way ... some months/weeks you're up, some down, but it usually works out in the end.

I do about 15-20 of these narrations per week and the price is staggeringly low. Much less than what DB quoted. But they're rip n reads (don't spend more than 5 minutes per) and I make money doing them in bulk.

Why are they priced so low? Because the producers who make the videos are priced staggeringly low. And the reason they're priced so low is that real estate agents are the cheapest people in the world.

up till the point where their commission comes into play, Jeff.

Loads of people are cheap as hell until it comes time to get paid... funny thing about that. Rolls Eyes

Realtors are cheap. I did some research on a major cable company that has a local RE channel that are 10-15sec ads for property. The VO is done out of the midwest at "a dollar-a-hollar" - yes $1 to $5 each for the VO. Amazing!!

The group I work with takes video captured by the realtor, outsources the editing to Egypt and drops my VO in. They charge the realtor $40. Why so low? because realtors don't see the value in video tours and refuse to pay any more than that.

The ones on cable aren't even tours. Just a photo with a VO. The photos leave much to be desired too.

jeff - where da VO at? maybe it's just me - but all i get is photos ...

i used to d a BUNCH of these (when the market was better, i guess) for a hoity-toity realtor in connecticut - houses in the $6m - $10m range - on retainer for $600/month. i did an average of 4-5/month, sometimes a little more, sometimes a little less.

you'd think, with jeff's almost $1m house, the realtor could feel good about investing $100 in decent VO.

that came out wrong - i wasn't criticizing kafer - only the cheap-o realtors.

Just as realtors get a percentage of the sale, I've often thought we should charge a percentage of the listing price for our services. Certainly on this million dollar home, they could have ponied up more than $25. But the videographer who hired me wasn't getting paid much either, I'm sure. At the very least, he wasn't allowed extra budget for pro-VO.
