Here's a new one on me. I was having a problem with my Audio Desk software which runs through my MOTU 828 MkII interface. The audio would halt recording or playback for a couple of seconds every 3 or 12 or 20 seconds and gave me an error message about not having enough RAM, which was ridikaluss!

After two long sessions with MOTU support we tracked it down to the Firewire cable between the interface and the Mac itself. I replaced it and all is (sort of)* well again. Who would of thunk it?

----
*They made me download the newest versions of the software for the interface and the editing program and they're quite different from the older versions so I'm having to learn a bunch of stuff all over again! Arrgh.

I just swapped out my FW cable that came with my interface with an ol' reliable (and shorter) FW cable I used to use. Yep...it sounds smoother now.

People that worry about their XLR cables should also worry about their FW or USB cable too! Smile

I've got a $200 oxygen free HDMI cable to sell you, Lance. Picture sharpness is sooo much better!
Firewire (and HDMI) cables carry data, plain and simple. It's 1's and 0's flowing down the wire, and in the case of Firewire, power. That's all.
Are all Firewire cables created equal? No, some may outlast others, and replacing one with a faulty connector can solve a lot of problems. A bad cable can cause loss of data transmission, but don't expect your audio (or picture) quality to change.
That seems to be crossing into audiophile territory.

Donning my asbestos suit now... Inoccent

I was just pointing out that XLR cables aren't the only type of cable one should think about...firewire connections are often taken for granted. Some people find that over time their XLR cables have worn down or they don't sit right, and the same can be said of Firewire cables too. Every piece of gear can be an effective tool or a weak link, and that includes FW cable. I'm not advocating for a hierarchy of designer firewire cables. Smile
