SoundCloud has been the social music platform of choice until now, some major improvements to Indaba’s cloud-based recording studio, which is like an online version of Pro Tools for musical collaboration is changing SoundClouds future domination in this growing arena of media.

Music production, (and may I assume VO production will soon follow) too, is headed towards the cloud(s), a catch-all term for applications and data living on servers rather than on your computer’s hard drive.

To read more about what may become a portable, easy to use, quality DAW in your future, click below:

So what's next? Will your .mp3 player become your interface and the tiny microphone be the quality of a Neumann U87?

Only time will tell.

Frank,

Fascinating. I'm going to have to investigate this further.

Agreed. This really looks promising! Thanks for the info, Frank!

On a side note, I happened to mention the whole cloud computing concept to my wife yesterday. She started laughing hysterically. Once that subsided, she described the picture that popped into her head: an angel walking around through the clouds, tripping over all the data sticking out. Smile

This is like the mobile.me project that studios are currently using for work cuts. Great to be able to have everyone on a project be able to access whatever whenever they need in 1 location. Keeps everyone on the same page.

July's edition of EQ has an article on trackng without a DAW. It is more on alternative recording devices and gadgets like the Zoom H2.

Does this all fit with the shift to lower quality?

I downloaded Indaba v2 today, and so far haven't gotten past opening the console. I've attempted to record a test track, and the console crashes. I attempted to import a small audio file and the import icon just spins until I shut the console down. I've searched for some sort of System Requirements link and have come up empty.

From what I've read this v2 is pretty new and is experiencing some bugs. (As usual the folks who used to v1 are all ticked off at v2.) I hope they get it straightened out because the implications of being able to record musical tracks with players from around the world in a virtual studio is absolutely mind-blowing, and it fits right into my personal situation. The guys in my old band are literally spread all across the country.

Thanks for bringing this topic up Frank!

There are more applications available which I did not mention.

Be watching how VOIP will change how music/VO projects is/are created in our near future. No longer will ISDN codecs be the preferred way to provide "studio quality" audio in real time as IP audio and video takes over where expensive boxes left off.

There are software applications available today for little or no cost which provide the benefits of real-time high quality audio and video which are designed for use in other industries or fields of endeavor which are kicking VO oriented codecs behinds.

Things are changing, keep your eyes open and think outside the box.

I just received a reply to a question I posted on the Indaba Forum: “This version of the console is not compatible with Mac OS 10.4. We're rolling out a new version within the next month that should solve your problem. Sorry for the inconvenience!”

They also indicated there was a problem with Mac OS 10.5...
