I just ran some Mogami cable to see if it's as good as everyone says. Part of this process involved changing out a patch cable from my preamp to my processor. This is XLR female to 1/4 male and previously had been unbalanced. Replaced with a Mogami Gold TRS patch cable. The sound is definitely better, but the wavform is now a little lopsided. Switching back to the old unbalanced cable shows a good wavform again, but the sound isn't as good as the Mogami cable.

Does anyone have any insight into how I can get a healthier looking wavform with the new cable? Thanks in advance!

Edited to add picture:

And audio file (first half is Mogami, second is the junk cable)

I wouldn't worry so much about it. I had that happen once with a mic and it turned out the mic was bad...but that's another story.
If you are happy with the sound I would let it go. It looks like mine when add the lo pass filter on my mackie. You might check to make sure you haven't pushed something like that somewhere. Otherwise it may just be giving you a more accurate picture of your sound.
Hope that helps

Just listened to the file. The 2nd part is just much cleaner. It is missing some of the low end mud you had on the first part of the file. That is why it looks like it does.

The 2nd part is the cheapo cable. The first part is the Mogami. You like the 2nd better?

It's amazing how different the two are.

ok sorry I misunderstood what you were saying.
The first read is a little fuller once I turned up the volume some.
When a waveform like that 2nd half of yours appears that's what scares me after I've seen a full waveform like the first one. The first one is the type of waveform I normally see when I record.
So I made an assumption and didn't listen as carefully as I should have. I apologize for that. To me the sound that you hear is much more important than the waveform. I took a quick listen at a low volume. I should have spent more time.
Hope that makes sense.
At a higher volume the sound isn't as muddy. At a low volume, at least on my system, it sounded a little muddy.

No worries. Really appreciate your input. I just wanted to make sure I understood what you were saying.

I agree that the sound should take precedence over the look. But on the other hand, since the waveform is such a visible part of the product we produce, I'd like for mine to leave the shop looking nicely balanced, so to speak.

In addition to being clearer, the Mogami sounds bassier to me and you're right, possibly a little muddy, so maybe the added bass is contributing. I think it may need dialed back a touch.

What are you monitoring with? If you're on KRKs anything with reasonable bass is going to be muddy. The Mogami didn't sound muddy to me...sounded much better - high and low end.

Lance the sound at a higher volume for me is ok. I don't use KRK's.
At low volume on my monitors it was muddy. I did a quick listen because I was going by the waveform and wasn't paying as much attn to the sound as I maybe should have or obviously to what was written. That's what I get for making assumptions. I thought his main concern was the waveform so that is what I addressed.

Slightly reducing low and lower mid frequencies results in a healthier wavform with his cable. Let me know if you still hear any mud.
