I bought a Mac Mini ... super quiet and plenty fast.

I'd like to pose a question for MacMini/ProTools users...

Digidesign highly recommends recording to an external firewire drive with the Oxford chipset.... I have not been able to find an Oxford drive quiet enough to leave on during recording.

another other users recording to an external firewire? or just recording to internal drive?

Here's one bit of anecdotal data for you: I've heard Grover Gardner of Blackstone Audio say that his company issues Mac minis to its audiobook narrators, and they're told to record directly to the internal hard drive rather than to an external drive. He said that in his experience, they've had fewer problems doing it that way.

I've always recorded directly to my Powerbook's hard drive from Pro Tools without incident.

i JUST got a Mac Mini for ProTools and LOVE it.. it's so quiet !

My external drive is a LaCie "Rugged" drive - just 5200 RPM/ 320GB. Not much if any noise that i've noticed.

This drive is nice: bus powered, and lets me run my 002 off its FW 400 connection.

FWIW - the latest Mac Minis let you run two monitors - so you can have a "control room" screen and a "voice booth" screen. That, and being able to leave the ISO booth OFF so there's no longer any fan noise bleeding into the mic - has me far happier with this little Mac mini than i ever expected.

I use the internal drive for all of my recording on my Mac Mini. Of course my backup is external though. Flawless.

I have the same setup as Bob, record onto the internal drive, then, about once a month I move everything off to the external drive. NOTHING gets erased. Which means, I have several drives sitting here with nothing but old audio files. I don't use them often, but those times when you get a call to update something you did a year or two back, they are priceless.

Internal drive is the most trouble-free way to go for simple recording in Pro Tools. That's what I tell my students...
