Am I part of your business network? Am I connected with you via multi-platform social media applications? Are my details stored on your database? Do you know how to use the delete function? If the answer to any or all of my questions is yes, use the delete function until you are able to answer NO.

Just so we're clear, I have no use for you or put another way, to me you are useless.

I will not be used by you as part of your professional online strategy. There's good news - I'm not going to use you to further my online career profile. You could do everyone a favour if you really want, link to this piece, Twit it, blog it, Facebook it, make a youtube video of the expression on your face as you read and thought about what I've written.

Right. Now you stopped doing everything. Start again but this time behave like a bottle of Ketchup. Ketchup makes my chips taste nice. Heinz know how they make it, how they sell it and could tell me how much money they make but they don't, they just concentrate on making something to make my chips taste nice.

Online - Be Ketchup. Add something to the world,. Be interested, be interesting and avoid at all costs the user mentality, the self promoter mentality and the career hungry grabber mindset.

If you are able to be you, I'm interested but if you have a sale on NOW, I'm not buying and to be honest nor is anyone else.

For someone like you who has copious amounts of clients coming to you, this is great advice. For the rest of us, we need to be out there promoting our services and drumming up business.

BTW - Heinz is a publicly traded company so they do announce how much money they make. And I'm pretty sure they advertise their wares.

Literalism has its place and most metaphors don't stand up to scrutiny. You probably need to think a little deeper and analyse a little less.

Philip's point is valid --- don't just tell me to be interested in you, be interesting in the first place. That's good advice for anyone. Jeff's right as well: those of us not flooded with work need to get our names out there.

There's a balance to be struck and doing so can be tricky.

You're right of course and the whole point in my original post was to plant the the seed that what people are doing is wrong but for the right reason and as such they're not getting the results.

About a year or so ago a 20 something girl appeared on youtube and introduced herself in a number of accents. Her page got a number of hits, she got a load of publicity and .................. Sadly, and nothing. As far as I'm aware the entire exercise got her nowhere and by that I mean nowhere commercially or professionally.

Stop and start all over again. The only way ahead is by daring to be different. It's a pain, but it will be worth the effort.
