Dan-O
I have had both the Focusrite Platinum and the Avalon 737, no longer have the Focusrite.
To my ear the Avalon sounds better, period. |

If you mean a fine Neumann is still a fine Neumann, you're quite right, but different grades of petrol can make an important difference in performance on the highway. I'll bet you could get someone to ship you an Avalon on a trial basis or certainly on a full refund within 30-day basis. It could be interesting....
I also understand any trepidation you may feel. Maybe..."People like the sound of my voice (and equipment) as is. Why risk modifying that sound?"...? I get it.

The Ferrari reference was about Dan's voice in an enamel bucket. |

I think the Avalon sounded better. Clearer, cleaner and warmer. _________________ David White

I love the growl right out of your "okay" on the Avalon sample. I can tell you were wearing headphones.....don't tell me I'm wrong! LOL.
Congrats on the new shiny box.....and the bucket. _________________ Ben

So, the bottom line, from everything that has been mentioned from the start, is... If you agree the preamp side of the Avalon 737 does indeed make a difference with your particular mic and set-up--then invest in the Avalon M-5?? _________________ Wild Willie Edwards

No problem...but here's an issue with the M5 that the Avalon site admits about great super-high-purity preamps: they bring out the room acoustics.
Do we want that in voiceover? Not really. Sometimes I suppose. Up front and in my face, thank you very much. _________________ Skype: globalvoiceover

You know, there are an amazing variety of options available in the world of preamps today. But sometimes we get caught up in our working world and forget to take advantage of and embrace this complexity. We become stuck on one particular idea of a sound we provide, totally unable to even contemplate trying anything new and different. Once the seed of change is actually planted, we unconsciously become unsettled and question our existing setups without any regard for the effect it is having on our work and the producers final product. At the same time manufacturers and distributors need to understand that even though they may produce a product that everyone says is of an amazingly new design or the usually perfected recreation of a vintage product, the bottom line is that all they've really produced is another way to amplify a signal, no matter what the cost or claim. Maybe one day a time will come when we as consumers and users of these products will stand up and take this into consideration -- recognition that gear lust affects us all and it's yet another veil keeping us from becoming who we really are in front of a mic. _________________ Genus |

Ok, I admit it, I own a Mk1 Philip Banks and that's all people buy from me. I have a portable version I take on holiday with me, it even works on location, in poorly equipped studios and in live environments.
Warning - It's high maintainance, heavy and ****ing expensive. |

LOL...over on GS gear forum, there was a thread asking if preamps really only "give the goods" when they're driven to their characteristic distortion: implying that they're all very similar otherwise.
Only two other people besides me responded. I challenged some one to have a "low gain" shootout of pres, which I think would support the OP's idea. The thread got completely ignored...so I just bumped it. It's a valid point, and I think it's pretty true. _________________ Skype: globalvoiceover

737 is a love lovely amp and can make the TLM103 sound like a U87.
Though I believe the Avalon M5 or a Vintech 1272 are better choices. Cupeled with a LA2A or a LA4 compressor you'll have gold. _________________ The Blog:

Acoustics are counter-intuitive. If one thing is certain about acoustics, it is that if anything seems obvious it is probably wrong. |
