Check out this video on the BoingBoing site, made during the World Science Festival 2009; as Bobby McFerrin demonstrates the universal power of the pentatonic scale.

I've seen that. Always worth a 2nd or 3rd look. Fun stuff!

That man is so entertaining. Thanks for sharing this because I hadn't seen it. I've seen some of his other stuff, though, and I always learn something.

Thanks for that, Bob. I hadn't seen that before.
If you view the full video(s):
http://www.worldsciencefestival.com/video/notes-neurons-full
in Part Two at around 14:00 they begin a discussion on thirds and their relevance to speech that I, as a VO, find very interesting. Bobby even does a DLF imitation.

It's such a shame that the vast majority of people know McFerrin only for "Don't Worry, Be Happy," arguably the worst thing he has ever done.

W. O. W. !.

That was way too cool. I'll have to show that to my wife, who's pursuing her Masters in music education. That kind of demonstration would be fun to duplicate in a classroom setting.

I saw him in concert years ago. He's quite amazing, isn't he.

That was fantastic, and really quite interesting. I'd like to watch the whole video.

Here's a bit more for fans of McFerrin, with him performing with one of my favourite musicians, Aziza Mustafa Zadeh.

I saw this, too. I'm "impressed", we'll say, that the pentatonic scale resulted from McFerrin's body language. In Western culture, it would be unnatural for singers to sing the pentatonic scale. It would be more natural for singers in Western culture to sing tones of the Ionic scale. I noted that a few strong voices stood out. Perhaps some of McFerrin's followers from other presentations peppered the house that day.

I used to associate with a person who makes thousands THOUSANDS of dollars as a motivational speaker for large corporations. This person places tone bars beneath their seats - the notes of the pentatonic scale, which are naturally harmonious. (Orff Schulwerk). When the execs play the tone bars, they are declared working harmoniously together, or some such thing.

The Music Theorist who posted at http://boingboing.net/2009/08/01/bobby-mcferrin-hacks.html says it much more eloquently than I possibly could. McFerrin primed the audience - planted a suggestion. Not a bad thing, necessarily. Whatever brings folks together, I suppose.

I like Bobby McFerrin. What's not to like? Plus, if memory serves me, one or two of his parents were opera singers/voice teachers. Good stuff.

All very interesting.
