"I know I ought to have a car but I really do not want one" I protested. Mrs Banks sighed and did the tutting thing.

"CAR!" she shouted and the dog dutifully ran out the front door and camped by the tailgate of her lorry. "Come on!" The latter command was for me not Jazz.

We travelled around doing various domestic and charitable works. We walked the dog and then ended up in Inverness, at Dicksons of Inverness to be precise. Mrs B and I sat in front of David Gray (yes, really) and she handed him a pile of documents. Having signed a few pieces of paper Mrs B then handed David her Maestro card - BEEP - account debited.

In a few weeks I'll be driving a new, black, Nissan Micra.

"What if I don't want a Micra?" I protested. It was the look! I'm convinced that I missed a golden opportunity to keep my mouth shut.

Nice looking car! I'm so glad they put the "Brand New" plate on it. I would have felt horribly confused otherwise.

Subtle isn't it? As I type my car is being built in Sunderland as Nissan's policy is to build to order as opposed to keep mountains of stock lying around on disused airfields. I'm global and UK business minded. Profits got to Japan and work goes to UK based car workers. As you know most people don't need corporate dividends they simply need work.

So is this replacing the Land Rover, or is this just so Jazz can FINALLY have a car of his own? Wink

Anne keeps the Land Rover, was always hers. My car is a 11 year old Subaru Legacy Estate (station wagon). Under the UK car scrappage scheme I get $4,000 off the price of a new car if I scrap my old one so that's what we've done. Subaru really was just for Jazz and me, in that order. My annual mileage is around 7,000.

Philip,

I wondered if the Subaru had yielded up the ghost. I guess instead it's being sent to the scrap heap.

Philip,

I always imagined you on a scooter.

Wow, didn't know "Cash 4 Clunkers" was also in the UK! Rolls Eyes

BTW: Brian's Subarau Legacy Station Wagon is also 11 years old! With 127K miles on it.

I had to get rid of my 12 year old Saturn with 190K miles on it (would not have passed emissions inspection!) 2 years ago for a Mazda 3. Once that's paid off next year we'll be getting him a new car!

Man, I want a Mazda Miata next time I buy a car.

If I end up in LA, though I may just get this instead.

Actually, that Vespa looks pretty sweet. I wonder if they're allowed on the freeways.
heh.

Our '96 Geo Prizm with close to 168K miles was recently declared "cosmetically totaled" after getting pelted by hail. We chose to keep it, and received a check for just over $2K from the insurance company. It still runs like a champ, and we plan on driving it 'til it perishes from natural causes.

Deebs.

That's what I ride every day. A Piaggio Fly 150. Same chassis as the Vespa LX 150.

Here's me behind my scooter.

Got one. Love it. Paid off. Five speed box and all the wind noise you can go deaf on. Of course here we have the worst drivers on this continent (that's not a subjective comment) so I don't hit the main roads too much. It's a fast way to die.

I was pumping petrol once and a couple kept looking at me, then the car, then me, then the car ... finally stopping the head bobbing looking at me but pointing at the car.

"How do you get in?" they politely asked. (I'm a pretty good sized member of my gender)

I smiled and said, "I don't get in, I put it on."

Very snappy— and if there's room enough for Jazz, then it's perfect.

Several years ago I was the spokesperson (TV and radio) for a Mazda dealership in SC. I drove a beautiful white Miata with tan leather interior for a year...loved that car.

I also had a cobalt blue Vespa for 4 months...brand new- took it everywhere. Then, it was stolen. I spent a month pleading on the radio (I was doing a morning show back then) and hanging 'Lost' signs all over town...with a picture of that beautiful blue Vespa. Oh- I rarely took mine on the highway- though if I remember they can get up to 80mph. Too scary for me.

I still get sad when I see one on the road. If I ever move to LA- I may get one too Deirdre!! Smile
